Schalke 04 host Bayer Leverkusen in Bundesliga soccer action from the Veltins Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Schalke 04 enter this match looking to put an end to their horrendous 12-game winless run within the league after settling for a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin in their last league appearance. The draw put Schalke in 10th place, tied with Freiburg on 38 points with a record of 9 wins, 11 draws and 10 losses this season. In the tie against Union, Berlin took the lead after just 11 minutes but Jonjoe Kenny would unleash a shot from distance and beat the Union goalkeeper to tie the game at one in the 27th minute. Both teams would have their chances throughout the second half, but ultimately it was a point per side between the two as the game finished all square at the final whistle. Suat Serdar leads Schalke in scoring with 7 goals on the year while Amine Harit leads Schalke in assists with 4 assists on the year to go along with his 6 goals.
Bayer Leverkusen on the other hand, enter this match with 56 points, tied on points with Borussia Monchengladbach with a record of 17 wins, 5 draws and 6 losses following a 4-2 loss at the hands of Bayern Munich in their last match. In the loss to Bayern, Lucas Alario gave the hosts the lead just 9 minutes in, replacing kai Havertz who was missing the match due to injury. Munich would tie the game at one in the 27th and would surge ahead 3-1 with a pair of goals three minutes apart in the 42nd and 45th minutes. Bayern would add a 4th before Florian Wirtz cut the deficit to 4-2 for Leverkusen, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as Munich held on for the win, leaving Bayer empty-handed. Havertz leads Leverkusen in scoring with 11 goals on the year while Karim Bellarabi has 6 assists for Bayer this season.
The plus money with Schalke is tempting, but I’m not going near Schalke with a ten foot pole during this winless drought that they’re stuck in. Leverkusen needs to take advantage of winnable spots like these if they’re going to have any hope of catching Monchengladbach sleeping and jumping ahead into one of the Champions’ League positions for next year. I just think that Schalke’s in too poor of form right now to even take a chance on, so I’ll side with Bayer to pick up the win with the -1 handicap to get the wager down to even money.
