Real Sociedad host Osasuna in La Liga soccer action from Reale Seguros Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Real Sociedad come into this match sitting in 4th place, tied on points with Getafe with 46 points and a record of 14 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses after a 2-1 win over Eibar in their last match before the league was halted due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. In the match against Eibar, Mikel Oyarzabal gave Sociedad the lead from the penalty spot just 16 minutes in, and Sociedad dodged a bullet in the 29th as Eibar had a penalty saved by Sociedad’s Alejandro Remiro. Willian Jose added a 2nd goal for Sociedad in the 75th which proved to be huge as Eibar pulled a goal back in the 90th minute but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. Willian Jose leads Sociedad in scoring with 9 goals this season while Oyarzabal has 8 goals with 6 assists and Alexander Isak and Portu each have 7 goals with Portu owning a team-high 8 assists on the year.
Osasuna on the other hand, come in parked in 11th spot with 34 points and a record of 8 wins, 10 draws and 9 losses after a 1-0 win over Espanyol in their last match before the pause of the La Liga season. The match against Espanyol saw a clean first half with no bookings but also no scoring. The second half on the other hand, saw Roberto Torres score from the penalty spot just six minutes into the second half to give Osasuna the lead and that was all the hosts would need as Espanyol had a man sent off in the 83rd and wouldn’t be able to muster up an equalizing goal the rest of the way. Chimy Avila leads Osasuna in scoring with 9 goals on the year while the aforementioned Torres and Ruben Garcis each have 6 goals this season with Torres adding a team-high 7 assists on the year.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game, as these first matches back from a pause are some of the hardest to gauge as you never really know what you’re going to see from the teams, maybe some take a cautious approach or some come out firing. I think Sociedad will come out firing here as they’re still in the running for one of the Champions League spots down the stretch, and a good start to that race will be essential right out of the gate. There’s also the underlying stat that Sociedad hasn’t lost to Osasuna in the league since 2012 so I’ll side with Real Sociedad to start on a high note with a win here.
