Real Madrid host SD Eibar in La Liga soccer action from the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Real Madrid enter this match in 2nd place, chasing down Barcelona, two points behind the league leaders with 56 points and a record of 16 wins, 8 draws and a league-low 3 losses. Real Madrid fell out of the driver’s seat of the La Liga table with a shock 2-1 loss to Real Betis in their last match before the Spanish top flight was halted due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. In the loss to Real Betis, Real Madrid fell behind in the 40th minute before Karim Benzema tied the game at one from the penalty spot in the third minute of first half stoppage time. The game remained tied at one for most of the second half, but Betis would steal the win and the points in the 82nd minute as Madrid wouldn’t be able to find a late equaliser. Benzema leads Real Madrid with 14 goals and 6 assists while Sergio Ramos has 5 goals and Toni Kroos has 5 assists on the year. Thibaut Courtois is the #1 goalkeeper for Real Madrid, conceding just 0.63 goals per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 24 league appearances this season.
Eibar come into this match sitting in 16th place, just two points clear from safety on 27 points with a record of 7 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad in their last match before the league-mandated break. In the match against Real Sociedad, Eibar fell behind just 16 minutes in when Sociedad scored from the penalty spot. Eibar had a chance to tie the game with a penalty of their own, but Fabian Orellana was stopped and Eibar was still held off of the score sheet. Sociedad took a 2-0 advantage in the 75th, and while Charles pulled a goal back for Eibar in the 90th, converting from the penalty spot, it wasn’t enough as Sociedad held on for the win and sent Eibar crashing to another defeat. Orellana leads Eibar in scoring and assists with 7 goals and 6 helpers this season while Charles has 5 goals on the year for Eibar. Marko Dmitrovic is the top goaltender for Eibar, conceding 1.5 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
I’d like to make a case for Eibar and heavy plus money, but the fact is that Eibar are still scuffling and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them going down to the Segunda Division when all is said and done on the final matchday. Real Madrid has had some time to stew on that loss to Real Betis, and what it undid in terms of the win the previous match in El Classico against Barcelona to take the lead in the standings only to have it wash away with the loss. Another defeat or dropping points in a winnable spot like this would catastrophic for Real, and I don’t think Madrid wastes the opportunity here. I’ll side with Real Madrid with the -1.5 handicap to get the price down.
