Mainz 05 host Augsburg in Bundesliga soccer action from the Opel Arena on Sunday morning.
Mainz 05 enter this match in 15th place, sitting three points clear of the relegation zone on 31 points with a record of 9 wins, 4 draws and 17 losses despite picking up a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in their last match. In the victory over Frankfurt, Moussa Niakhate gave Mainz the lead on the road just two minutes before the half, and the visitors would hold onto that lead until Pierre Kunde Malong doubled Mainz’s advantage in the 77th minute, essentially putting the game out of reach for Mainz, giving themselves a key three points in the race to avoid relegation. Robin Quaison leads Mainz in scoring with 12 goals on the year while Karim Onisiwo leads Mainz in assists with 6 helpers this season.
Augsburg on the other hand, come into this game just one point better on 32 points, tied with Union Berlin in 13th place with a record of 8 wins, 8 draws and 14 losses after a 1-1 draw with FC Koln in their last match. Augsburg had a chance to take a lead in the 27th minute, but Florian Niederlechner’s penalty was saved and punched away for a corner. The scoreless draw would hold into the halftime break and for most of the second half before Koln took the lead in the 85th minute. Augsburg’s back was against the wall for all of three minutes before Philipp Max tied the game at one from a corner kick, going unmarked and slotting the ball home at the near post to salvage a point for Augsburg in the end. Niederlechner leads Augsburg in scoring with 11 goals along with a team-high 6 assists while Max is 2nd on the team in scoring with 8 goals for Augsburg this season.
Both teams realistically could use the points as a win would be a huge step towards guaranteed safety. With that said, Mainz need the points slightly more being on the edge of the relegation zone, but I’m not sure how much I really trust Mainz even after the win over Frankfurt. On the other hand, Augsburg rallied to salvage the draw against Koln, but Koln’s also had issues putting teams away all season long. Instead of splitting hairs and picking a side, I’m going to side with the draw as I can see the two sides cancelling each other out at full time. I’ll also take a shot with the correct score of 1-1 for sizeable plus money.
