VFL Wolfsburg and SC Freiburg square off in German Bundesliga soccer action from the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday morning.
VFL Wolfsburg come into this match in 6th position, sitting on 45 points with a record of 12 wins, 9 draws and 9 losses after a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen in their last match. In the win over Bremen, there was no scoring in the first half and for much of the second half, but Wout Weghorst broke the deadlock with the game’s lone goal in the 82nd minute and despite their best efforts, Werder Bremen wouldn’t be able to find an equalizer, leaving Woflsburg to claim all three points at the game’ final whistle. Weghorst leads Wolfsburg in scoring with 12 goals on the year while Renato Steffen has 6 goals and Maximilian Arnold has a team-high 8 assists this season.
SC Freiburg on the other hand, come into this match sitting in 8th place on 41 points with a record of 11 wins, 8 draws and 11 losses following a 1-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in their last match. In the win over Gladbach, the game was scoreless at the half but Nils Petersen would break the tie after coming off of the bench just one minute earlier. Monchengladbach would finish with 60% possession, but in the end, Freiburg would pick up the win and the three points that go along with it. Petersen leads Freiburg in scoring with 10 goals this season while Vincenzo Grifo and Christian Gunter each have a team-high 6 assists this season.
Freiburg did take down Monchengladbach in their last match, and three points here would be massive to get them back into the race for the Europa League for the final couple of games. On the other hand, Wolfsburg could go five points ahead with a win, as the team below them, Hoffenheim, has a tough test against RB Leipzig and a win with a Hoffenheim loss would put them five points clear with three games to go. The problem is that Wolfsburg hasn’t been all that great at home all season. Ultimately, I expect a hard fought game here, and I think the two sides cancel each other out at full time so I’ll side with the draw as my main bet for this match as well as put a bit on the correct score of 1-1 at sizeable plus money.
