Fortuna Dusseldorf and Borussia Dortmund square off in German Bundesliga soccer action from the Merkur Spiel-Arena on Saturday morning.
Fortuna Dusseldorf enter this match still in 16th place, sitting on 28 points, three points from safety with a record of 6 wins, 10 draws and 14 losses following a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim in their last match. In the match against Hoffenheim, Dusseldorf took the lead just five minutes in thanks to a goal from Rouwen Hennings and Dusseldorf got an added advantage four minute later when Hoffenheim went down to 10 men with a straight red card. Hoffenheim wouldn’t be fazed though, tying the game at one just seven minutes later. Dusseldorf thought they had responded just a couple of minutes later, but VAR ruled out a Fortuna goal after a foul just prior to the goal. Hoffenheim took a 2-1 lead just after the hour mark but Hennings would tie the game at two and complete his brace from the penalty spot with less than a quarter of an hour to play. Both sides would have their chances down the stretch, but ultimately the spoils were shared as the referee blew the final whistle. Hennings leads Fortuna Dusseldorf in scoring with 14 goals this season while Erik Thommy and Kenan Karaman each have 6 goals with Thommy logging a team-high 4 assists on the year.
Borussia Dortmund come in still parked in 2nd place, sitting on 63 points with a record of 19 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses following a narrow 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin in their last match. In the victory over Hertha, neither side saw much action in the first half, and for almost the first hour of the game. However, Emre Can would break the deadlock in the 58th minute to give BVB a lead that ultimately they would not relinquish over the next half hour plus, picking up a massive three points and keeping their slimmest of title hopes alive. Jadon Sancho leads Dortmund with team-highs of 17 goals and 16 assists while Thorgan Hazard has 7 goals and 13 assists and Achraf Hakimi has 5 goals and 10 assists on the year. Roman Burki is Borussia Dortmund’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 1.27 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 27 league appearances this season.
I’ve gone back and forth on this one, but I keep coming back to the same point and that’s while Dusseldorf needs all the points they can accrue over the last few games to try to clinch safety, I just think their chances are running out with Dortmund and then RB Leipzig on deck with all of the other teams around them having winnable matches. Dortmund needs to keep winning to have their title hopes alive for at least one more day, and if nothing else to try to ensure Champions’ League for next year. I see Dortmund winning, but I also don’t see Dusseldorf going without a fight, so I’ll take Dortmund to win with both teams to score at decent plus odds.
