Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich duke it out in German Bundesliga soccer action from the BayArena on Saturday morning.
Bayer Leverkusen enter this match in 4th place, sitting on 56 points tied with Borussia Monchengladbach with an identical 17 wins, 5 draws and 7 losses after a 1-0 win over SC Freiburg in their previous match. In the match against Freiburg, the game was deadlocked at nil at the half, but Kai Havertz broke the tie with a goal in the 54th minute. Both sides had chances down the stretch, but Leverkusen locked things down and held on for the big win and the three points that go with it. Leverkusen owned 61% possession despite being outshot 9-7 in terms of attempts on goal in the win. Havertz leads Leverkusen in scoring with 11 goals along with 5 assists while Karim Bellarabi has 6 assists for Leverkusen. Lukas Hradecky is conceding 1.21 goals per 90 minutes with 9 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season as Bayer’s top goalkeeper.
Bayern Munich continues to lead the way in the Bundesliga standings on 67 points with a record of 21 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses after picking up a 5-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf in their last match. In the game against Dusseldorf, Munich took the lead after just 15 minutes with a Fortuna own goal before Benjamin Pavard doubled Bayern’s lead just before the half hour mark. Robert Lewandowski pushed the lead to 3-0 with his 28th goal of the year two minutes before halftime and added a second goal five minutes after the half for the brace to bring his total to 29 goals this year. Alphonso Davies made it five just two minutes later, and Bayern would carry that lead to the finish line and cruise to victory. Lewandowski’s 29 goals lead not only Bayern but the Bundesliga as well while Serge Gnabry has 11 goals with 10 assists and Thomas Muller has a team-high 18 assists this season. Manuel Neuer is Bayern’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 0.90 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
This is one of the hardest games I’ve had to call yet, as Bayern Munich is as good as advertised while Bayer Leverkusen is a team I’ve been high on since the restart. With that said, I think that Bayern’s focus was on the Dortmund match which they won and then pummelled a Fortuna Dusseldorf team that was just plain overmatched. But Leverkusen can hang with Munich, and as a matter of fact, Leverkusen’s beat Bayern in back-to-back fixtures dating back to last season. I’m leaning towards the under here as we can see a tight affair, but I also see value in taking Leverkusen on a double chance at plus money. Braver punters can take a shot on Leverkusen to win with the under 3.5 for a +850 payout, but the under and the double chance are my two suggested plays here.
