Bayern Munich host Fortuna Dusseldorf in a German Bundesliga soccer matchup from the Allianz Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Bayern Munich come into this match leading the Bundesliga table in 1st on 64 points with a record of 20 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses, pushing their winning streak to seven games within the league after a crucial 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund last time out. In the match against Dortmund, Bayern had to fight for possession, but by the half hour mark, things started to balance out and Joshua Kimmich gave Munich the lead just before the half with a cheeky chip into the far corner. The two sides were even down the stretch, but Bayern Munich would hold on for the key win and all three points, putting one hand on the Bundesliga trophy, up seven points with six games to go. The two teams split possession 50/50 with each side having 13 goal attempts with Bayern holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Robert Lewandowski leads Bayern and the entire Bundesliga in scoring with 27 goals this season while Serge Gnabry has 11 goals with 9 assists and Thomas Muller has 7 goals and a team-leading 17 assists this season. Manuel Neuer is the #1 goalkeeper for Bayern, averaging just 0.93 goals conceded per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 28 league appearances this season.
Fortuna Dusseldorf could use a massive win here to help climb out of the relegation zone, sitting on 27 points in 16th place with a record of 6 wins, 9 draws and 13 losses, but extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 2-1 win over Schalke last time out. In the match against Schalke, the game was tied at halftime before Schalke fired themselves ahead in the 53rd minute. Fortuna woke up just after the hour mark, with Rouwen Hennings potting an unfortunate rebound for Schalke to tie things up at one and Kenan Karaman gave Dusseldorf the lead just five minutes after that. Schalke would press late, but Dusseldorf would hold on for a key three points in the battle for survival. Hennings leads Dusseldorf in scoring with 12 goals this season while Erik Thommy and Kenan Karaman each have 6 goals this season with Thommy putting out a team-high 4 assists this season.
Part of me wanted to take a stab at Dusseldorf and the extreme plus money given the decent run of form that they’ve been on combined with the road dominance that’s happened since the restart of the Bundesliga, with road teams winning more than 40% of the matches up to this point. However, while this feels like a potential look-ahead spot for Bayern, Munich have one hand on the trophy and want to get things done and dusted as soon as possible. Munich is also just the way better team here and have outscored Dusseldorf 8-1 in the last two head-to-head meetings. There’s not a lot of spots for Bayern and value here, so I’ll take a shot with Bayern to win via shutout as I think Dusseldorf’s scoring woes could come up here.
