SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen square off in German Bundesliga soccer action from the Schwarzwald Stadion on Friday afternoon.
SC Freiburg enter this match sitting in 7th place on 38 points with a record of 10 wins, 8 draws and 10 losses after a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in their last outing. In the draw with Frankfurt, Vincento Grifo gave Freiburg the lead 28 minutes in but Frankfurt tied the game at one just seven minutes later. Nils Petersen and Lucas Holer pushed Freiburg in front 3-1 with a pair of goals two minutes apart, but once again Freiburg couldn’t catch their break late as Frankfurt struck in the 79th and 82nd minutes to tie the game at three. Both sides would have chances late, but ultimately both would settle for a share of the points at the final whistle. Petersen leads Freiburg in scoring with 9 goals this season while Christian Gunter has 6 assists and the aforementioned Grifo has 5 assists this season.
Bayer Leverkusen on the other hand, come in sitting in 5th spot after falling to Wolfsburg by a final count of 4-1 in their last outing. The loss pushed Leverkusen’s record to 16 wins, 5 draws and 7 losses, leaving Leverkusen tied with Borussia Monchengladbach on 53 points. Wolfsburg took a lead late in the first half and blew the doors wide open with 3 goals in 11 minutes in the 2nd half. Julian Baumgartlinger got Leverkusen on the board in regular time, but too much time had gone to get Leverkusen back into the match. Kai Havertz leads Leverkusen in scoring with 10 goals along with 5 assists while Karim Bellarabi has 4 goals and 6 assists for Bayer this season.
I said before that if Freiburg found a way to not get a result against a struggling Frankfurt side then I’m done with them and not only did Freiburg not pick up all three points, Freiburg managed to do it in one of the most frustrating ways possible by blowing a two-goal lead in the last quarter of an hour. Leverkusen were stepped over by Wolfsburg, so you’d have to imagine that Bayer has their sights set on bouncing back. Leverkusen’s just been the better team in better form, so I’ll side with Bayer Leverkusen to pick up a big three points on the road here.
