Union Berlin and Mainz 05 square off in German Bundesliga soccer action from the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei on Wednesday afternoon.
Union Berlin come into the match sitting in 13th place on 30 points, tied with Augsburg after a 4-0 loss to rival Hertha Berlin in their last match. The loss sent Union Berlin’s record to 9-3-15 this season with Union’s 9th loss in 13 away matches. In the game against Hertha, the match was tied at the half, but the second half saw it all unravel for Union as Hertha scored two goals in two minutes before adding a 3rd goal just after the hour mark. Union Berlin also added a 4th goal with less than a quarter of an hour to play, making the score insurmountable for Union down the stretch. Sebastian Andersson leads Union Berlin in the scoring department with 11 goals while Marius Buiter has 7 goals and Christopher Trimmel has a team-high 7 assists this season. Rafal Gikiewicz leads Union Berlin in goal, conceding an average of 1.59 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 27 league appearances this season.
Mainz 05 come into this one in 15th place, parked on 27 points with a record of 8 wins, 3 draws and 16 losses after a 5-0 beatdown loss to RB Leipzig in their last match. In the loss to Leipzig, it was gone from the word go as Leipzig took the lead just 11 minutes in, added a 2nd 12 minutes later and a 3rd goal 13 minutes after that Mainz conceded for the 4th time three minutes after the break and a 5th goal came with 15 minutes to play. It showed in the post-match statistics as well as Mainz had just 40% possession while being outshot 21-4 in terms of goal attempts and 9-1 in regards to shots on goal. Robin Quaison has a team-high 12 goals this season while Karim Onisiwo and Jean-Paul Boetius each have a team-leading 5 assists for Mainz this season. Robin Zentner is the #1 goalkeeper for Mainz, conceding an average of 1.81 goals per 90 minutes with 3 clean sheets in 22 league appearances this season.
It’s okay to make a case in the Bayern match, but for Union to be shutout against Hertha Berlin in a derby has to sting and now it’s no goals in their first two games post-break for Union coming into this match, so I’m not sure how high spirits will be for this one with Union in that somewhat safe zone for the time being. Mainz has more at stake being closer to the relegation zone, but I can’t trust the 05ers either after getting destroyed by Leipzig. Instead, I’m going to side with a draw here. This just feels like a game where the majority of the play is in the middle third of the field and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a goalless draw here so I’ll take the draw as my main bet and put a bit on the 0-0 correct score for major plus money as well.
