RB Leipzig host Hertha Berlin in German Bundesliga soccer action from Red Bull Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
RB Leipzig enter this one in 3rd position, sitting on 54 points with a record of 15 wins, 9 draws and 3 losses after a 5-0 thrashing of Mainz in their last matchup. In the beatdown of Mainz, Timo Werner opened the scoring for Leipzig just 11 minutes into the match. Yussuf Poulsen doubled the lead 12 minutes later and Marcel Sabitzer pushed the lead to 3-0 nine minutes before halftime. Werner scored his second goal of the match three minutes after halftime and completed his hat trick with a quarter of an hour to play. Werner leads RB Leipzig and is 2nd in the Bundesliga with 24 goals this season as well as 7 assists while Sabitzer has 9 goals with 6 assists and Christopher Nkunku has 4 goals and a team-high 12 assists this year. Peter Gulacsi is the #1 goalkeeper for Leipzig, conceding 0.84 goals per 90 minutes with 8 clean sheets in 25 league appearances this season.
Hertha Berlin come into this match sitting in 10th place on 34 points after back-to-back victories post-hiatus after a convincing 4-0 win over Union Berlin in the Berlin Derby last time out. The game was scoreless at the half with only a yellow card being brandished on either side, but Hertha came out firing in the second half as Vedad Ibisevic and Dodi Lukebakio scored one minute apart and Matheus Cunha pushed the lead to 3-0 just after the hour mark. Dedryck Boyeta added a 4th for good measure late in the second half. Lukebakio leads Hertha in scoring and assists with 6 goals and 5 assists this season while Rune Jarstein is the top goalkeeper for Hertha, conceding 1.52 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 23 league appearances this season.
The derby win over Union was nice to see for Hertha Berlin and Hertha still has an outside chance at the 6th spot for Europa League contention next year. However, I think Leipzig is back on track after whooping up on Mainz and I just don’t think that Hertha will do enough to keep pace with Leipzig here. Werner and Leipzig are on a mission down the stretch, so I’ll side with Leipzig to win by a couple here with the -1.5 handicap.
