Fortuna Dusseldorf host Schalke 04 in German Bundesliga soccer action from the Merkur Spiel-Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Fortuna Dusseldorf enter this match in 16th position, sitting on 24 points with a record of 5 wins, 9 draws and 13 losses after a 4th straight league draw in the form of a 2-2 tie against Koln, pushing their unbeaten run to five games. In the match against Koln, Kenan Karaman opened the scoring for Dusseldorf just four minutes before the half. Fortuna carried the momentum up to and after the hour mark after stopping a penalty in the 59th minute and just two minutes later, Erik Thommy buried the ball to give Fortuna a 2-0 lead. The wheels would fall off late though, as Koln struck twice in a span of three minutes to tie the game at two, thus sharing the spoils between the two sides. Rouwen Hennings leads Fortuna in the scoring department with 11 goals this season while Thommy is alone in 2nd with 6 goals and a team-high 4 assists.
Schalke 04 on the other hand, enter this match in 8th, sitting on 37 points, tied with Freiburg with a record of 9 wins, 10 draws and 8 losses following a 3-0 loss to Augsburg in their last match, pushing their winless run to nine games in the Bundesliga. Augsburg took charge just six minutes into the match and the lead held for most of the match before Augsburg added a 2nd goal in the 76th minute and a 3rd for good measure in the first minute of second half stoppage time. All of this while Schalke dominated with 67% possession with a 12-9 edge in goal attempts, but Augsburg outshot Schalke 7-2 in terms of shots on goal. Suat Serdar leads Schalke in scoring with 7 goals while Amine Harit has 6 goals and a team-high 4 assists this season.
It’s weird for me to say that Dusseldorf is in better form than Schalke, but in reality, they’re unbeaten in their last 5 Bundesliga matches and have picked up a point in 8 of their last 9 while Schalke is on a brutal nine-game winless run. The problem is that Schalke is the better team and Dusseldorf should’ve won the game against Koln had they not collapsed late. Even still, I think Dusseldorf is good enough and playing well enough to get a point and I need to see Schalke get back on track before backing them, so I’ll side with the draw here as I just can’t see one side taking this over the other.
