VFL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund meet in Bundesliga soccer action from the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday morning.
VFL Wolfsburg come into this match sitting in 6th place with a record of 10 wins, 9 draws and 7 losses after pushing their unbeaten run to seven games with a 2-1 win over Augsburg in their first match post-break. In the Augsburg match, Renato Steffen opened the scoring for Wolfsburg just two minutes before the halftime break. Augsburg tied the game at one less than ten minutes after the half and almost took the lead in the 67th before having the goal disallowed to due offside thanks to VAR. Wolfsburg took full advantage in stoppage time as Daniel Ginczek slid home the winner in the first minute after the full 90. Wout Weghorst leads Wolfsburg in scoring with 11 goals with 3 assists while the aforementioned Steffen has 5 goals and Maximilian Arnold has a team-high 5 assists this season.
Borussia Dortmund on the other hand, remains in 2nd place, trying to chase down Bayern Munich with a record of 16 wins, 6 draws and 4 losses, sitting on 54 points after a 5th straight league win with a 4-0 blanking of Schalke 04 in their last appearance. In the win over Schalke, Erling Haaland opened the scoring for BVB just before the half hour mark before Raphael Guerreiro doubled the lead just before halftime. Thorgan Hazard pushed the lead to 3-0 for Dortmund before Guerreiro completed the brace just after the hour mark, pushing the lead to 4-0. Jadon Sancho leads Dortmund with 14 goals and 15 assists this season while Marco Reus is right behind in 2nd with 11 goals and the previously mentioned Haaland has 10 goals this season. Roman Burki is the starting goalkeeper for Borussia Dortmund, conceding 1.4 goals per 90 minutes while owning 9 clean sheets in 23 league appearances this season.
I’d like to think that Wolfsburg shows up here and gets a result to help bolster their spot in the top 6 and help make a push towards Europa League next season. However, Dortmund’s owned Wolfsburg over the last few years, winning eight of the last nine meetings with the one outlier being a scoreless draw. Over that span, Wolfsburg’s been outscored 24-3 and Wolfsburg hasn’t scored against Dortmund in any of the last six head-to-head matchups. I’ll take Dortmund here and to get some value out of the bet I’ll take Dortmund to win to nil as the trends would suggest Wolfsburg’s in for a long outing here.
