We have Bundesliga soccer action on Sunday afternoon as Union Berlin has a tall task ahead when they host Bayern Munich from the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.
Union Berlin come into this one sitting in 11th position with a record of 9 wins, 3 draws and 13 losses on 30 points after a 3-1 loss to Freiburg in their final appearance before the mandated hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In the Freiburg match, Union fell behind with 10 minutes ot go in the first half and saw that lead double another ten minutes after the restart. Sebastian Anderson pulled a goal back for Berlin just six minutes later, just after the hour mark. Freiburg would restore the two-goal cushion in the 82nd and seal Union Berlin’s fate, heading back with a loss. Sebastian Anderson leads Union Berlin in scoring with 11 goals while Marius Buiter is close behind in 2nd with 7 goals and Christopher Trimmel has a team-high 7 assists this season. Rafal Gikiewicz is Union’s top goalkeeper, sitting with 6 clean sheets on the year and an average of 1.48 goals conceded per 90 minutes.
Bayern Munich come into this match in a familiar position, even after a two-month break from league play, leading the table with a record of 17-4-4 and 55 points with 73 goals for and just 26 goals against in league play this season. Bayern’s last game before the hiatus saw a 2-0 win over Augsburg, Munich’s 4th straight shutout across all competitions. In the Augsburg match, Bayern were kept held down in the first half, but Thomas Muller broke the tie just after the half-time break and Leon Goretzka slammed the door shut with an insurance marker in the first minute of injury time. Robert Lewandowski leads Bayern in scoring with a league-high 25 goals while Serge Gnabry has 11 goals with 9 assists and Thomas Muller has a team-high 16 assists this season. Manuel Neuer has an astounding 10 clean sheets in 25 matches with 0.96 goals conceded per 90 minutes.
I considered heavy plus money with Union, I won’t lie, as the two month break could leave some rust on Bayern that may take time to shake off and a goal could be enough for Berlin to sneak out a massive result. Union narrowly missed out on a point when the two met earlier this season, and that game was at Bayern as well. However, with this game being played without spectators, that wipes out whatever home field help that Union would’ve had and with Bayern trying to close out the league, I don’t see any other result than a convincing Bayern Munich win here so I’ll lay the -2 with Bayern Munich on the Asian Handicap here.
