Over 2.5 (-175), Under 2.5 (+137)
Arsenal is hosting Chelsea at Emirates Stadium in the London derby in round 20 of the English Premier League.
Arsenal is not playing well and has won only 1 of their last 14 games. With only 24 points from 19 games, Arsenal is in 11th place in the EPL standings. Offensively, Arsenal is solid with 25 scored goals, but their defense can’t get any consistency and Arsenal have conceded 28 goals. In their latest EPL match against Bournemouth away from home on the Boxing Day, Arsenal had 62% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 87% of the correct passes. Arsenal came into this game with new coach Mikel Arteta, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Arsenal is struggling for the last month or so, and everyone in and around the club is hoping that Arteta can get them back on the winning track. Aubameyang has scored 12 goals for Arsenal this season so far, while Lacazette added 5 goals. Tierney and Kolasinac are the only two injured players and coach Arteta will not have them at his disposal for this game. Arsenal is also playing in the Europa League where they are one of the main candidates to win the competition, and they should go for it because I’m afraid that is the only way for Arsenal to qualify for the Champions League next season. With the arrival of Arteta, Arsenal will start playing a different type of soccer with more possession, more passes, and more created chances. A type of soccer very similar to Manchester City, after all, Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant coach in Manchester City.
Chelsea is also in a big slum right now and has won 3 of their last 7 games while losing 4 games. Despite bad results as of late, Chelsea is still in 4th place in the EPL standings with 32 points, 33 scored goals, and 27 conceded goals. Abraham is the leading goal scorer for Chelsea with 11 goals, while Pulisic and Mount both have 5 goals. Van Ginkel and Loftus-Cheek are the only two injured players. In their last EPL game versus Southampton at home on the Boxing Day, Chelsea was the better team with 66% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and 81% of the correct passes. By looking at the stats, it seems that Chelsea had a good game, but their attack was sloppy and couldn’t score on good chances they created, while their defense couldn’t handle the attacks from one of the worst teams in the EPL. Chelsea lost this match 0-2. In the Champions League Top 16, Chelsea will play versus Bayern Munich which I expect to be an interesting matchup with great soccer. I have mentioned this before, Chelsea is a young team with a lot of young and talented players, and I don’t expect absolutely anything from them this season, but next season Chelsea will be the legit contestant for the EPL title, mark my words. I love watching Chelsea because they are playing nice, patient soccer, they have great goalkeeper and strikers, but Chelsea will need to sign another one or two experienced defenders that could bring stability and experience to their defense. As far as Lampard’s coaching goes, I believe he is the long-term solution for Chelsea and as the season goes on, Lampard will get more experienced and confident in his decisions as the head coach.
Trends are mixed here with the home team winning 10 of the last 13 games between Arsenal and Chelsea. Neither Arsenal nor Chelsea is playing good enough at the moment for me to stake my money on the winner and for that reason, I will pick something on goals here.
