Over 2.5 (-175), Under 2.5 (+137)
Wolverhampton is welcoming Manchester City to Molineux Stadium in part of round 19 of the English Premier League.
Wolverhampton is playing well this season, both in the EPL and in the Europa League. Wolves have lost only 1 of their last 12 games and are in 8th place of the EPL standings with 28 points, 26 scored goals, and 22 conceded goals. In the first knockout in the Europa League, Wolverhampton will play against Espanyol and I like their chances in this matchup. In their latest EPL game versus Norwich away from home, Wolverhampton had 50% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 11 corner kicks, and 81% of the correct passes. Wolves were 1-0 behind at the half time, but they had a good second half and, in the end, Wolverhampton has won this match 1-2. Raul Jimenez is Wolverhampton’s leading goal scorer with 7 goals and 5 assists. Boly and Gibbs-White are both injured and will not be playing. Ever since Wolverhampton got promoted to the EPL a few years ago, they have been constantly improving and investing in new players and that has been certainly paying. Wolverhampton has a great coach in Nuno Espirito Santo, great players Jimenez, Jota, Traore, and Neves, but they are a little thin on the defensive end and that is something Wolverhampton’s management must fix in the winter transfer window if they want to have a chance of winning the Europa League. As far as the EPL goes, I see Wolverhampton right where they are right now, 8th place, simply because they don’t have the depth to stay competitive until the end of the season.
Manchester City is on a 4-game winning streak where they scored 13 goals while conceding only 3 goals. In the EPL standings, Manchester is in 3rd place with 38 points, 1 point less than Leicester in second place, and 11 points less than Liverpool at the top. With massive 50 scored goals in 18 games, Manchester City is the best-attacking team in the EPL and one of the best in Europe, but what is more important for Manchester City is that their defense is improving and that is something coach Guardiola will need in their run in the Champions League. In their last EPL match versus Leicester at home, Manchester City had 62% of ball possession, 12 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and high 90% of accurate passes. This was a match where Manchester City was dominant and has demonstrated a piece of their offensive firepower. City has won this match 3-1. Aguero and Sterling have both scored 9 times this season in the EPL, while Jesus and De Bruyne added 6 goals each. De Bruyne has been Manchester’s best player this season and is playing in the best form of his life. De Bruyne also added 11 assists in 17 games. Sane and Laporte and injured, while Silva, Stones, and Gundogan are still questionable. Aguero is no longer on the injury list and expected to play in this match. No matter who they play against, Manchester City is always playing their signature game style with high ball possession, high pressure when not in the possession of the ball, and a lot of short passes which is allowing them to create a lot of chances and score a lot of goals. I don’t think that City can defend their EPL title because Liverpool is playing fantastic and has 11 points to spare in front of the City. As far as the Champions League goes, City is playing versus Real Madrid in the Top 16 and I think they are certainly capable of winning that matchup.
Last time Wolverhampton and City met, Wolves got the better of the Citizens and have won 0-2. Both teams are playing good offensive soccer, and even though Manchester’s defense is improving, it’s still isn’t where is it should be. I’m giving the edge to Manchester City here, but I will pick something on goals.
