Over 2.5 (-225), Under 2.5 (+175)
Chelsea is welcoming Southampton to Stamford Bridge in round 19 of the Boxing Day English Premier League.
Chelsea has been hot and cold as of late and has won only 3 of their last 8 games. In the EPL standings, Chelsea is in 4th place with 32 points, 33 scored goals, and 25 conceded goals. Overall, Chelsea has been playing well this season since Lampard took over the helm of the team. In their latest EPL match against Tottenham, Chelsea was brilliant 56% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and 82% of the correct passes. Never mind the stats, Chelsea has displayed mature soccer, calm defense, and very productive midfield and attack. With 2 goals from Willian, Chelsea has won this match 0-2. Abraham has scored 11 goals for Chelsea this season while Pulisic added 5 goals, but he has been playing in weaker form as of late. Van Ginkel and Loftus-Cheek are the only two injured players for Chelsea which means coach Lampard will have his strongest players at his disposal for this post-Christmas schedule. Chelsea has been struggling in the attacking part for the last few games, in particular, Abraham who stopped scoring as often as he did when the season started. Chelsea is a great team, and I really enjoy watching them play because the soccer they are displaying is much different from Chelsea in the past. I think that Chelsea has enough quality to end up in the top 4 this season, but I believe they will be a force who will compete for the title next season.
Southampton has had a few good results over the last month and is now 3 points outside the relegation zone, in 17th place with 18 points. In their last game in the EPL versus Aston Villa away from home, Southampton had 44% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and only 69% of the correct passes. Stats can show us a lot, but they are certainly not painting the whole picture because Southampton had a great attacking day in this match, and they won 0-3. Danny Ings has been in fantastic form this season and has scored 11 goals for Southampton so far. Valery is the only injured player and he will not be in the lineup for this match. Southampton is a solid team with players like Redmond, Ings, and Ward-Prowse who is one of the best free-kick takers in the EPL. At the beginning of the season, Southampton wasn’t doing good but coach Hasenhuttl was able to wake up his players and get them back on the somewhat positive road. The battle for a safe spot outside the relegation zone will be extremely hard for the last 5 teams, but I believe that Southampton has enough quality to end up above the 18th place, but Southampton must fix its defense because 37 conceded goals in 18 games are not good.
Chelsea has been inconsistent as of late, but Southampton has been a disaster for most of the season. Southampton has had some success against Chelsea in the past, but most of that success was at home. Chelsea is the better team here, and they are slowly getting their groove back, so for that reason, I will side with Chelsea at home.
