Tottenham is hosting Chelsea in one of the most interesting matches of round 18 of the English Premier League.
Tottenham has started playing much better soccer since they hired Mourinho as the head coach a few weeks ago. In their last 5 games, Tottenham has 3 wins and 2 loses, one of which was against Bayern Munich in the Champions League that didn’t mean anything to Tottenham. With 26 points, 32 scored goals, and 24 conceded goals, Tottenham is in 5th place in the EPL. In the first round of the knockouts in the Champions League, Tottenham will be playing Leipzig who is one of the best teams in Bundesliga and a team that is playing really good attacking soccer. In their last EPL match versus Wolverhampton away from home, Tottenham had 43% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 73% of the correct passes. This wasn’t the best game we saw from Tottenham, but they were ahead from the 8th minute when Moura scored. In 67th minute Wolverhampton tied the game, but in 91st minute Vertonghen scored and Tottenham won this match 1-2. Since Mourinho arrived Tottenham is playing much better soccer and their game and both head and tail, and more importantly some important players like Alli, Kane, and Moura are playing in a much better form. Kane is the leading goal scorer for Tottenham with 9 goals, while Alli and Son added 5 goals each. Tottenham’s starting goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is still injured, while Lamela, Vorm, and Davies are still questionable. After this game versus Chelsea, Tottenham’s schedule is getting a bit easier and Tottenham could climb the standings to 4th place.
Chelsea is in a bit of a slump right now and they are struggling on the defensive end. Chelsea has 3 loses and 2 wins in their last 5 games and is in 4th place in the EPL standings. The strong attack has been the signature in this season for Chelsea, but that attack is also slowing down a little bit. In their last EPL game versus Bournemouth at home, Chelsea was the better team with 67% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 9 corner kicks, and 83% of accurate passes. Chelsea was constantly attacking in this match, but they couldn’t get through Bournemouth’s strong defense and in the end, Chelsea lost by a goal in 84th minute. Chelsea will be playing against Bayern Munich in the first round of the knockouts in the Champions League and this will certainly be a tough match for both teams. Tammy Abraham has been the discovery of the season for Chelsea and coach Lampard and he scored 11 goals in 16 games, while Pulisic and Mount added 5 goals each. Van Ginkel and Loftus-Cheek are only two injured players and they will not be playing. I’m loving Chelsea this season and their new soccer style with a lot of short passes and strong offense, but I don’t expect from Chelsea anything massive this season in the EPL and in the Champions League simply because they are a young team full of talent. Next season is when I expect the explosion of this team and with another 2-3 additions in the defense, Chelsea will be the legit competitor for the EPL title.
Trends are mixed here, and quality-wise Chelsea and Tottenham are close, but the experience in on Tottenham’s side and because of that and because Tottenham is playing at home, I’m giving the slight edge to Tottenham. With all that being said, I’m not ready to write off Chelsea in this game and for that reason, I will pick something on goals.
