Hoffenheim is welcoming Borussia Dortmund to PreZero Arena in round 17 of German Bundesliga.
Hoffenheim has been playing hot and cold this season and they can’t get any consistency in their game. With 24 points, 23 scored goals, and 27 conceded goals, Hoffenheim is in 9th place in the standings right now. Offensively Hoffenheim is doing good and is creating a lot of chances and scoring a lot of goals, but their defense is criminally bad. Hoffenheim has won only 1 of their last 5 games and has conceded 13 goals during that stretch while scoring only 7 goals. In their last Bundesliga game versus Union Berlin away from home, Hoffenheim was solid with 51% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, and 70% of the correct passes. Hoffenheim has won this match 0-2 with two second-half goals. Kramaric and Locadia have both scored 4 goals for Hoffenheim this season, while Adamyan and Bebou scored 3 goals each. Zuber and Beldofil are both injured and will not be in the lineup for this match. Hoffenheim has had a big expectation before the season started and was hoping to be in the top 5 in Bundesliga, but losing their coach Julian Nagelsman, and few important players from last season were too much for this club. I still think that Hoffenheim is a solid team, but something between 6th and 10th place is their maximum this season.
Just when I think that Borussia has got a hold of their defense, they go on and gamble a two-goal lead by making some terrible mistakes in their match versus Leipzig earlier this week. In that match, Borussia had 56% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 12 corner kicks, and 85% of the correct passes. As expected, this was a fantastic match with a lot of chances, pretty moves, nice plays, and more importantly, goals. The game ended in a 3-3 draw. Borussia is in 4th place in Bundesliga with 30 points, only 4 points behind Leipzig at the top. Borussia Dortmund is an offensive firepower in Bundesliga, and they are playing some of the best soccer, but their defense is still their biggest problem and if Borussia wants to be a favorite for the title, coach Favre must make some changes. Reus has scored 9 goals for Borussia this season, while Sancho has 9 goals and 9 assists. Delaney, Schmelzer, and Witsel are injured and will not be in the lineup for this game. Borussia was pretty good in the Champions League group stage and has qualified to Top 16 of the Champions League. This match is the last match for Borussia this year before the Christmas break and if they manage to win here, Borussia will stay in the hunt for first place, and their schedule after this break is on the lighter side which could potentially bring Borussia Dortmund close to the top, or even at the top of Bundesliga.
Both Hoffenheim and Borussia are playing great attacking soccer, but their defenses are a disaster. I’m giving the edge to Borussia, but I will rather pick something on goals here.
