Atletico Madrid vs. Valencia 10/19/19 Spanish LaLiga Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction
Over 2.5 (+110), Under 2.5 (-138)
Atletico Madrid is welcoming Valencia to Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in round 9 of Spanish LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid is playing firm ahd hard soccer with strong defense and compact midfield. With only 1 loss in their last 16 matches, Atletico Madrid is one of the best teams in LaLiga and is playing in fantastic form both in LaLiga and Champions League. In their last match against Valladolid, Atletico was a slightly better team with 55% of ball possession, but only 1 shot on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 81% of correct passes. This was a rough match, with a lot of fouls and not enough goal chances and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. Vitolo and Felix have both scored 2 goals for Atletico Madrid while Morata, Costa, and Partey each added 1 goal. Sime Vrsaljko is the only injured player for Atletico Madrid but he hasn’t played for a few months due to that injury. Atletico Madrid is the best defensive team in Europe, and coach Simeone is great tactician but Atletico lacks offensive versatility and imagination and for that reason i don’t think they will win LaLiga, or get far in the Champions League. To be clear, Atletico has some fantastic players, including one of the top 3 goalkeepers in the world in Jan Oblak, and some great strikers like Costa, Morata and young superstar Joao Felix, but the problem is their defensive game style. You can defend, and defend but teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid , and Sevilla will always find a way to score a goal, and a team like Atletico Madrid who has defensive style of soccer won’t have much success in competing on the offensive end.
Valencia has had a lot of problems in their club when the head coach and the general manager were fired by the club president. Despite all the troubles Valencia had a good game against Alaves with 56% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 80% of correct passes and was able to win this match 2-1. With 12 points, Valencia is in 8th place in the standings and has scored 12 goals and conceded 12 goals. In Champions League Valencia has 1 win and 1 loss. Maxi Gomez, and Parejo have both scored 4 goals for Valencia, while Kevin Gameiro has 2 goals. Rodrigo Moreno added 3 assists. Piccini, Soler, Gaya, Gameiro and Kondogbia are all injured and will not be playing. Albert Celades is the new head coach for Valencia and it will take a few games for players to settle down after their former coach was fired, but i believe that Valencia has the quality to be in the top 6 team in LaLiga because they are playing nice soccer with solid defense and a lot of plays through their wings. With all the injuries for Valencia and because they are playing in Champions League, there could be some consistency problems for Valencia, but in a group with Chelsea and Ajax i don’t see the advancing further than the group stage.
Atletico hasn’t lost any of their last 13 home matches and hasn’t lost any of their last 10 home matches against Valencia. Trends are mixed when Atletico and Valencia meet, but because both teams are playing Champions League next week, i will take a stab at the draw because some players might be rested.
