You could make a case that SMU probably got lucky in a couple of instances on the way to winning ten games last year, and while there’s likely to be some regression from the Mustangs team that finished 31st in yards per play last season, this is still a solid core from an SMU squad that was 5th in FBS in points per game last season. Shane Buechele is back to lead SMU at QB after finishing 6th in the country in passing yardage last season, and the same QB that led SMU to steamrolling Texas State by 30 last season by 30 points with SMU logging 639 yards of total offense. Texas State had to completely retool their defense in the offseason, and it’s one of the least experienced units in the country, so facing an offensive juggernaut like SMU in week one is far from ideal. I’ll lay the points with SMU in a blowout as my premium pick for this game.
