At 7:05 pm, our selection is on the New York Islanders over the Philadelphia Flyers. After a couple days of postponements, the NHL playoffs re-start today with two games on the ledger that feature the #1 seeds in each conference. And in both cases, those #1 seeds have to feel at least a little bit nervous at this stage. For the Flyers, they're one of the only teams left in the post-season that has perhaps some question at the goaltender position. On the one hand there is young Carter Hart who has gotten them most of the way here, but has shown some cracks and whose inexperience appears to be a vulnerability. On the other, there is veteran Brian Elliott who has plenty of playoff experience but whose best years are behind him. Philly has stuck with Hart so far, but he's been very shaky in two of the last four games and a poor showing early on in this Game 3 might get him the hook. The Flyers are lucky this series is not 0-2 right now, needing OT to win Game 2 after getting trounced in the first one. The Isles like the position they're in as they're playing great hockey since the re-start. And their great play has completely erased the memory of their 7-game losing streak heading into this post-season. Indeed, in New York's three playoff series, they're 8-3, and have yet to lose by more than one goal. Overall, they've outscored their opponents by 37-19, or 1.63 gpg. In contrast, the Flyers have gone 5-3 in their two playoff series, but have been outscored 20-15 (-0.62 gpg). Take New York. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
