Hurricanes Looking to Steal Home Ice

The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off of a series win against the New York Islanders, where they won in five games. Carolina won games one, two, three, and five by scores of 3-1, 5-3, 3-2, and 6-3, but did lose game four by a score of 3-2. The Hurricanes were the way better team in the series and even outshot New York 44-35 in the game that they lost. Carolina was not really tested in the series, so it will be interesting to see how they do against New York on the road here.

Prior to the playoffs, Carolina won seven of their last nine regular season games and held opponents to three goals or fewer in all seven of those wins. The Hurricanes are scoring 3.80 goals per game, while going 33.3% on the power play and 72.7% on the penalty kill in the postseason. Seth Jarvis has led Carolina with three goals, four assists, and 11 shots on goal, while Necas, Svechnikov, and Skjei have all added five points.

Rangers are Great at Home

The New York Rangers are coming off of a series win against the Capitals, where they won in four games. New York won all four games in the series by scores of 4-1, 4-3, 3-1, and 4-2. New York dominated Washington in the series and their defense was very strong. The Rangers scored 15 goals in the four games and they also had great goaltending. Similar to the Hurricanes, New York was not tested in the first round, so it will be fun to see these teams go head to head.

New York finished first in the Metropolitan Division in the regular season and they won 10 of their last 13 regular season games. The Rangers are scoring 3.75 goals per game, while going 37.5% on the power play and 88.2% on the penalty kill in the postseason. Mika Zibanejad has led New York with one goal, six assists, and 12 shots on goal, while Vincent Trocheck has added three goals and three assists.

Starting Goalies

The projected starting goalie for Carolina is Frederik Andersen, who is 4-1-0 with a 2.25 goals against average and a .912 save percentage in the playoffs. Andersen battled injuries in the regular season, but he has been great when healthy. The projected starting goalie for New York is Igor Shesterkin, who is 4-0-0 with a 1.75 goals against average and a .930 save percentage. Shesterkin was outstanding in the regular season and had 36 wins.

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers Prediction

Both of these teams cruised to easy victories in the first round, but this series is going to be a battle for both sides. The Rangers won two out of three matchups in the regular season, but Carolina did outscore them 7-4 in the three games. Both teams are very solid defensively and have great goaltending, so we may see lower scoring games. New York was 30-11-0 at home in the regular season, while Carolina was 25-13-3 on the road. This is going to be a great game, but I think New York is going to come out strong on home ice, especially after being off for a week. My Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers prediction is for the Rangers to win game one.
