It’s another loaded slate of NHL games on Thursday with ten games taking place and with so many games there are plenty of winners. Let’s take a look at a free pick on each of the games.
Carolina Hurricanes -124 at Montreal Canadiens +110 Total: 5.5
The Montreal Canadiens GM has already held a press conference with the team starting the season 0-4. The Canadiens are averaging only 0.75 goals per game, and I don’t expect their offense is going to get any better against the Hurricanes that are giving up only 2.5 goals per game. This is way too good of a price for the Hurricanes who should cruise to the victory.
Play: Hurricanes ML -124
San Jose Sharks -110 at Ottawa Senators -110 Total: 6
The Ottawa Senators have gotten out to a 2-1 start to their season, but they are averaging only 2.33 goals per game which is 22nd in hockey. The Sharks defense has also been elite giving up only 1.5 goals per game, I expect Ottawa will really struggle to score, and the Sharks won’t score enough to push this game over the total. Back the under.
Play: Under 6
Colorado Avalanche -110 at Florida Panthers -110 Total: 6.5
The Avalanche have high expectations this season, but they have really struggled to start the season. And the defense has been a big issue giving up 4.3 goals per game. The Panthers are averaging 4.7 goals per game and they are going to attack the weak defense of Colorado. For the extra value, I am taking the Panthers on the puck line.
Play: Panthers -1.5
Washington Capitals -130 at New Jersey Devils +110 Total: 6.5
The Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils have both gotten out to fast starts to the season. These are two of the best offenses in all of hockey averaging four goals per game. They also have two of the best defenses both giving up under 2.5 goals per game. I expect in this game it’s going to be the defense that is the difference. Back the under to cash.
Play: Under 6.5
New York Islanders -135 at Columbus Blue Jackets +120 Total: 5.5
The Islanders weren’t a great offensive team last year and they have struggled to score goals again this season. The Islanders are averaging only 2.68 goals per game and Columbus is giving up only 2.33 goals per game. Look for the Islanders to struggle to score, and the Blue Jackets will pull the upset.
Play: Blue Jackets ML +120
Calgary Flames -135 at Detroit Red Wings +115 Total: 6
The Red Wings have been one of the most surprising teams of the young season sitting with a 2-1 record. The Red Wings' last game was a dominant one against Columbus winning 4-1.The Flames offense has struggled so far this season averaging only two goals per game, and their offense is going to struggle again in this game. Back the Red Wings on the money line.
Play: Red Wings ML +115
New York Rangers -105 at Nashville Predators -115 Total: 5.5
The Rangers and Predators have both struggled to score this season. The Rangers are averaging only 2.0 goals per game while the Predators are averaging only 2.33 goals per game. Expect very few goals by either team and for the under to cash.
Play: Under 5.5
Anaheim Ducks +170 at Winnipeg Jets -185 Total: 5.5
The Winnipeg Jets scored five goals in their last game, but the defense struggled giving up six, and that led to the overtime loss. The defense has been an issue for this team so far this season, and they will also give up at a few goals. I expect six or seven goals for the over to cash.
Play: Over 5.5 Goals
Vancouver Canucks +110 at Chicago Blackhawks -130 Total: 6
The Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks have combined for a total of one win in their last seven games of the season. Both offenses have really struggled to start this season combining to average 4.25 goals per game. Even though the Blackhawks defense hasn’t been great, they will step up enough for the under to cash.
Play: Under 6
Edmonton Oilers -179 at Arizona Coyotes +160 Total: 6
The Edmonton Oilers have been quite impressive to start the season, sitting with a perfect 3-0 record and averaging 4.33 goals per game. Arizona’s defense is giving up 5.3 goals per game, and the Oilers are going to make this game ugly quick. Back the Oilers on the puck line.
Play: Oilers -1.5
