The Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers meet in NHL action from BB&T Arena on Saturday night.
The Carolina Hurricanes will look to build on a 4-2 win over Florida last time out. Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes in scoring with 43 points including a team-high 20 goals with 23 assists while Vincent Trocheck has 38 points with 17 goals and 21 assists and Dougie Hamilton has 37 points with a team-high 31 assists this season. Martin Necas, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov and Nino Niederreither all have double-digit goal and assist marks this season. As a team, Carolina is averaging 3.2 goals on 32.5 shots with a 27.4% success rate on the PP while allowing 2.4 goals on 28.3 shots against with an 83.8% success rate killing off penalties this season.
The Florida Panthers will try to rebound from their loss to the Hurricanes in their last game. Jonathan Huberdeau leads the Panthers in scoring with 50 points including 16 goals and a team-high 34 assists while Aleksander Barkov has 48 points with a team-high 21 goals along with 27 assists. Patric Hornqvist has 32 points with 14 goals and 18 assists while MacKenzie Weegar, Anthony Duclair and Keith Yandle all have double-digit assists this season while Frank Vatrano has 17 goals as well this season. As a team, Florida is averaging 3.2 goals on 34 shots with a 21.3% success rate on the power play while allowing 2.6 goals on 30.4 shots against with a 79.7% success rate on the PK this season.
Carolina is 1305 in their last 18 games following a win and 38-17 in their last 55 games as a favorite while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games overall. Florida is 7-1 in their last 8 home games and 1-4 in their last 5 games as an underdog while the over is 3-1-1 in their last 5 home games. The over is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Florida.
I get the case that could be made for both sides here, as these are two of the better teams in the competitive central division. With that said, Carolina’s owned the Panthers this season, winning 5 straight and going 5-1 this season. It says something that Carolina’s top goaltender is out and the “backup” is more than capable of stepping in long term. Florida’s got a great team in their own right, but the trends this season point to Carolina. Give me the Hurricanes here.
