The New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers meet in NHL action from Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
The New Jersey Devils will look to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to the Rangers in their last matchup. Pavel Zacha and Jesper Bratt share the team lead in scoring with 25 points apiece, with Zacha logging 10 goals and 15 assists while Bratt has a team-high 20 assists this season. Ty Smith and Jack Hughes each have 21 points with Smith logging 19 assists while Hughes has 9 goals and 12 assists this season. Myles Wood also leads the Devils with 14 goals on the year. as a team, New Jersey is averaging 2.5 goals on 29.8 shots per game with a 13.7% success rate on the power play while allowing 3.2 goals on 30.9 shots against with a 71.15 success rate on the PK this season.
The New York Rangers will look to build on their victory over the Devils from their last matchup. Artemi Panarin leads the Rangers in scoring with 43 points including 13 goals and 30 assists while Adam Fox has 39 points with a team-high 34 assists. Ryan Strome, Pavel Bucnevich and Mika Zibanehad each have double-digit goal and assist tallies this season while Chris Kreider has a team-high 17 goals on the year. As a team, New York is averaging 3.2 goals on 29.2 shots against with a 19.4% success rate on the power play while allowing 2.6 goals on 29.1 shots against with an 84.3% success rate killing off penalties this season.
New Jersey is 8-22 in their last 30 games overall and 18-37 in their last 55 games as an underdog while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record. New York is 4-1 in their last 5 games as a home favorite and 1-4 in their last 5 games following a win while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games as a home favorite. The road team is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I get that the Rangers are the better team playing better hockey, and New Jersey’s deadline deals sure made it look like New Jersey is just mailing it in on the rest of the season. However, as well as New York is playing, they’re not going to win every game and the Devils have been playing better as a whole on the road than the Rangers have been at home this season. The road team has also won all five meetings between the two this season, so I’ll take my chances with the Devils on the money line in this spot.
