The Nashville Predators and the Carolina Hurricanes meet in NHL action from the PNC Arena on Thursday night.
The Nashville Predators will look to build on a 7-2 romp over the Tampa Bay Lightning in their last matchup. Filip Forsberg leads the Predators in scoring with 29 points including a team-high 11 goals and 18 assists while Roman Josi has 27 points with a team-high 22 assists on the year and Viktor Arvidsson has 24 points with 10 goals and 14 assists. Calle Jarnkrok and Mikael Granlund each have 11 goals and Eell Toivanen has 10 goals while Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Johansen each have double-digit assist tallies this season. As a team, Nashville is averaging 2.5 goals on 30.1 shots with a 20.3% conversion rate on the power play while allowing 2.8 goals on 30.9 shots with a 75% success rate on the PK this season.
The Carolina Hurricanes will look to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red wings in their last matchup. Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes in scoring with 38 points including a team-high 17 goals and 21 assists while Vincent Trocheck isn’t far behind with 16 goals and 18 assists for his 34 points. Dougie Hamilton has 33 points with a team-high 27 assists and 136 shots on goal while Martin Necas, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov and Nino Niederreiter each have double-digit goal and assist numbers this season. As a team, Carolina is averaging 3.1 goals on 32.3 shots with a 28.2% success rate on the power play while allowing 2.4 goals on 28.3 shots against with an 83.3% success rate killing off penalties this season.
Nashville is 5-0 in their last 5 road games and 13-3 in their last 16 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games as a road underdog. Carolina is 6-0 in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record and 12-5 in their last 17 home games while the under is 7-2-2 in their last 11 games as a home favorite. Nashville is 1-11 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams.
I get the case that could be made for Nashville and the plus money after how well the Preds played against Tampa Bay. However, the Predators also feel like they’re in position for a letdown after such a big win and as good as they’ve played lately, the bottom line is that they’ve had no success against Carolina this season, losing all four meetings to this point by a combined margin of 16-7. I just think that Carolina has Nashville’s number and until I see otherwise, I have to back the ‘Canes at home here.
