The Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens meet in NHL action from the Bell Centre on Wednesday night.
The Calgary Flames will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 3-2 overtime win over Toronto in their last matchup. Elias Lindholm leads the Flames in scoring with 34 points including a team-high 23 assists while Johnny Gaudreau has a team-high 14 goals and 15 assists. Matthew Tkachuk also has 28 points with 10 goals and 18 assists while Sean Monahan and Mikael Backlund each have 24 points with 8 goals and 16 assists this season. As a team, Calgary is averaging 2.6 goals on 29.8 shots with a 20% success rate on the PP while allowing 3 goals on 29.4 shots against with an 80.3% success rate on the PK this season.
The Montreal Canadiens will look to build on their 4-2 win over Toronto last time out. Jeff Petry and Tyler Toffoli each have 30 points with Petry logging 11 goals and 19 assists while Toffoli has a team-high 19 goals on the year. Jonathan Drouin also has a team-high 20 assists for the Habs this season. As a team, Montreal is averaging 3.1 goals on 33.1 shots with a 20% success rate on the power play while allowing 2.8 goals on 28.2 shots against with a 76.4% success rate on the PK this season.
Calgary is 1-6 in their last 7 games on no rest and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record. Montreal is 4-9 in their last 13 games played on 1 days rest and 1-5 in their last 6 Wednesday games while the under is 10-3-2 in their last 15 games against a team with a losing record. The underdog is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
I get the case that could be made for both sides here as Montreal’s at home and Calgary’s on a back-to-back. With that said, my thoughts on the Montreal Canadiens are well known and haven’t changed over the course of the last few weeks as I think the Habs continue to get all of this undeserved respect. Calgary’s had their ups and downs, but they’re also in need of victories in the midst of the playoff hunt and I just think there’s value with the Flames in this spot.
