The Washington capitals and the New York Islanders meet in NHL action from the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night.
The Washington Capitals will look to rebound from their 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers last time out. Nicklas Backstrom leads the Caps in scoring with 37 points including 13 goals and a team-high 24 assists while Alex Ovechkin has 30 points with a team-high 18 goals and 123 shots on goal this season. John Carlson’s on 29 points with 22 assists while T.J. Oshie has 25 points with 9 goals and 16 assists. Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson each have 22 points with double-digit assist totals as well this season. As a team, Washington is averaging 3.4 goals on 27.7 shots per game against with a 23.5% success rate on the PP while giving up 2.9 goals and 28.8 shots against with an 81% success rate on the PK this season.
The New York Islanders will be out to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh last time out. Mathew Barzal leads the Isles in scoring with 28 points including 10 goals and 18 assists while Nick Leddy has 25 points with a team-high 24 assists. J-G Pageau and Jordan Eberle each have 11 goals on the year while Brock Nelson has 20 points with a team-high 12 goals and Josh Bailey also has 20 points with 15 apples this season. As a team, New York is averaging 2.9 goals on 29.4 shots with a 19.4% success rate on the PP while giving up 2.3 goals on 27.6 shots with an 90.9% success rate killing off penalties this season.
Washington is 8-2 in their last 10 road games and 17-5 in their last 22 games overall while the over is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games as a road underdog. New York is 12-4 in their last 16 games overall and 19-7 in their last 26 home games while the over is 9-1-2 in their last 12 games as a home favorite. The underdog is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings between the two teams and the road team is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings between the two.
I get the case that could be made for either side here and I got burned going against the Islanders before, but I’m going to try my luck again. Historically, the Caps have had success against the Islanders and the underdog and road team (which a lot of times are the same) have controlled this series and I think that Washington’s getting some decent value at plus money here. Give me the Capitals.
