The Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators meet in NHL action from the Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday night.
The Montreal Canadiens will be out to build on their 4-0 win over the Oilers last time out. Jeff Petry and Tyler Toffoli share the lead in scoring for Montreal with 27 points apiece, with Petry logging 11 goals and 16 assists while Toffoli has a team-high 18 goals. Brendan Gallagher, Jonathan Drouin and Tomas Tatar each have 21 points with Gallagher logging 13 goals while Drouin has a team-high 19 assists and Tatar has 14 assists this season. Nick Suzuki also has 20 assists for the Habs as well this season. As a team, Montreal is averaging 3.2 goals on 33.2 shots with a 23.8% success rate on the power play while allowing 2.7 goals on 28.8 shots with a 76.4% success rate on the PK this season.
The Ottawa Senators will try to bounce back from their 3-2 loss to Toronto last time out. Brady Tkachuk leads the Sens in scoring with 11 goals and 11 assists for his 22 points with a team-high 150 shots on goal while Thomas Chabot has 21 points with a team-high 17 assists and Drake Batherson has 21 points with 11 goals and 10 assists. Tim Stutzle and Josh Norris each have double-digit assists this season while Connor Brown has 16 points with 7 goals and 9 apples. As a team, Ottawa is averaging 2.6 goals on 31.6 shots with a 13.7% success rate on the PK while giving up 3.7 goals on 32.2 shots with a 76.4% success rate on the PK this season.
Montreal is 2-8 in their last 10 road games and 2-7 in their last 9 games as a road favorite while the under is 18-7-2 in their last 27 games against a team with a losing record. Ottawa is 21-48 in their last 69 games overall and 12-31 in their last 43 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games as an underdog. Montreal is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings between these two teams.
I get why the Canadiens would be favored here as they’ve had the better run of luck over the course of the season. However, the Habs continue to also be hit and miss and as bad as Ottawa has looked at times this season, they’re playing by far their best hockey at home and can be a wild card in the home underdog role. This is still a rivalry game and I think the Habs may not be ready for what Ottawa brings to the table here. Give me the Senators and the plus money here.
