The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres meet in NHL action from the KeyBank Center on Saturday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins come into this one looking to build on their 5-2 win over Buffalo from their last matchup. Sidney Crosby leads the Penguins in scoring with 25 points coming on 9 goals and 16 assists, sharing the lead in goals with Jake Guentzel who has 14 assists for his 23 points and Bryan Rust while sitting atop the mountain alone in terms of assists. The Penguins are averaging 3.2 goals per game on 28.7 shots per game with a power play percentage of 17.6% while allowing 3 goals per game on 29.2 shots per game and a penalty kill percentage of 74.4% this season.
The Buffalo Sabres will look to rebound from their loss to the Penguins last time out. Sam Reinhart and Victor Olofsson share the team lead with 19 points with Reinhart leading the Sabres with 11 goals this season. Jack Eichel is right behind with 18 points but has a team-high 16 assists and Taylor Hall has 16 points with 14 assists this season. The Sabres are last in the NHL, averaging just 2.2 goals per game on 28.2 shots per game with a power play percentage of 27.9% while allowing 3.3 goals per game on 30.8 shots per contest with a penalty kill percentage of 80.7% this season.
Pittsburgh is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall and 13-3 in their last 16 games as a favorite while the over is 3-0-2 in their last 5 games as a favorite. Buffalo is 1-10 in their last 11 games as a home underdog and 0-7 in their last 7 home games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. The road team is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I get why the plus money with Buffalo is worth a look as a home dog as the Sabres usually play their best at home. However, the Sabres are still a team in turmoil and are just trying to do as much damage control as possible if we’re being honest. Pittsburgh is a team I’ve bashed left and right, but the reality is the Penguins are starting to turn a corner and are back to looking like one of the NHL’s top teams. I have to side with the Penguins on the puck line here.
