The Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet in NHL action from PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday night.
The Washington Capitals will look to bounce back after a 4-3 loss to the Pens in a shootout on Sunday.
Evan Rodrigues opened the scoring early for Pittsburgh, giving the Penguins the lead just 19 seconds into the game but Nic Dowd would respond for Washington with just under eight minutes to go in the first and Alex Ovechkin pushed Washington in front just 2:20 later, heading to the second up 2-1. Colton Sceviour tied the game for Pittsburgh at the 2:10 mark of the 2nd but Nicklas Backstrom would retake the lead for Washington just after the midway point of the 2nd. Marcus Pettersson tied the game at three for Pittsburgh, and neither side would find the back of the next for the rest of the 2nd and all of the 3rd period, sending us to free hockey. Neither side had an answer in the extra period either, so it was followed by the shootout as Jake Guentzel was the lone goalscorer for Pittsburgh in all 8 combined shootout attempts, giving Pittsburgh the win and the extra point that goes with it.
Casey DeSmith got the win to after stopping 20 of 23 shots faced in regulation and OT as well as all four shots faced in the shootout while Ilya Samsonov ended up with the loss to fall to 1-0-1 on the year after giving up 3 goals on 27 shots faced in regulation and OT as well as one goal on four shots in the shootout.
Washington is 2-5 in their last 7 games as an underdog and 1-4 in their last 5 games as a road underdog while the under is 5-2-1 in their last 8 road games. Pittsburgh is 1-4 in their last 5 games overall and 146-69 in their last 215 home games while the over is 3-1-2 in their last 6 games following a win. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Pittsburgh.
Sunday’s matchup was extremely entertaining and in a game between these two rivals what else could you expect. With this game having a rest day on Monday, I like the thrills to spill over into Tuesday as I think we have another back and forth game so I’ll side with the over in this spot.
