The Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres meet Thursday in NHL action at the KeyBank Center.
The Washington Capitals have topped 40 wins in each of the last six seasons, but they’ve seen their year end in the first round each of the last two seasons. The Capitals made a lot of moves this offseason, which includes losing players such as Radko Gudas, Ilya Kovalchuk, Travis Boyd and Braden Holtby. The Caps made some splashy moves by adding Zdeno Chara, Conor Sheary, Justin Schultz, Henrik Lundqvist, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Paul LaDue. The Capitals aren’t getting any younger, but you still have to like their chances with Alex Ovechkin leading the charge and Jakub Vrana is starting to come into his own. The Capitals are still a club to be respected, but they’re in a tough division and this roster is aging rather quickly.
The Buffalo Sabres are coming off a 30-win season and haven’t made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season. The Sabres say goodbye to Dominik Kahun, Johan Larsson, Marcus Johansson, Michael Frolik and Wayne Simmonds. The Sabres made two splashes in free agency with Taylor Hall and Cody Eakin, giving the team some serious firepower at the top of the lineup and really changes the way you look at this team. If Carter Hutton can step up in net, the Sabres could be cooking with gas. There’s still question marks with these Buffalo Sabres, but this is about as good as you can feel about them in years. The drought has a chance to be over in Buffalo.
The Capitals are 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 1-4 in their last 5 overall. The Sabres are 5-1 in their last 6 home games and 1-6 in their last 7 overall. The under is 6-2-1 in Capitals last 9 overall. The under is 3-0-1 in Sabres last 4 overall. The Capitals are 12-4 in the last 16 meetings. The favorite is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings. The home team is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.
The Washington Capitals are going to be favored off reputation, and they've beaten up on the Sabres over the years. However, this is the best Buffalo Sabres team we've seen in years and there's real hopes for a playoff berth. If the Sabres live up to expectations, you won't be seeing this sort of numbers with them later in the year. I'll take it while it's still there. Give me the Sabres and plus money.
