The San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes meet Thursday in NHL action at the Gila River Arena.
The San Jose Sharks are coming off a 29-win season and look to avoid missing the playoffs back-to-back years for the first time since 1995-97. The Sharks lose Joe Thornton, Aaron Dell and Melker Karlsson, while they added Devan Dubnyk, Ryan Donato, Patrick Marleau and Matt Nieto. The Sharks could have a bounce back season if Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl rebound from a disappointing year. There’s also a chance Dubnyk and Martin Jones ends up being one of the better 1-2 goalie punches in the league. The Sharks have potential this season, but there’s also serious question marks that could lead to another rocky season.
The Arizona Coyotes are coming off a 33-win season where they made the playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Coyotes were one of the busier teams in the league this offseason, saying goodbye to players like Taylor Hall, Vinnie Hinostroza, Cal Soderberg and Brad Richardson. The Coyotes added Derick Brassard, Johan Larsson, Drake Caggiula, Tyler Pitlick and John Hayden. It’s going to be interesting to see how all these moving parts come together, as this is a franchise that hasn’t had real success in quite some time. In a perfect world, a goalie duo of Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta pans out and the Coyotes become a legit dark horse contender that builds on last years playoff berth.
The Sharks are 0-5 in their last 5 road games and 0-4 in their last 4 overall. The Coyotes are 4-1 in their last 5 home games and 1-4 in their last 5 overall. The under is 14-5 in Sharks last 19 road games. The over is 7-3 in Coyotes last 10 overall. The Sharks are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Arizona. The road team is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.
The San Jose Sharks have a chance to rebound from last year, but they were also so shaky that they're hard to trust entering this season. The Arizona Coyotes may take some time to adjust to so many moving pieces, but they appear to be a team heading in the right direction and have two reliable goalies. I'll lay the reasonable line with the Coyotes at home.
