The Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings meet Thursday in NHL action at the Little Caesars Arena.
The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off a 38-win season and have a chance to make the playoffs for a third straight season for the first time since moving from Hartford. The Hurricanes lose Trevor van Riemsdyk, Anton Forsberg, Justin Williams and Joel Edmundson. The Hurricanes add Jesper Fast and Joakim Ryan. The Carolina Hurricanes weren’t given the easiest draw in the league, but they’re led by an aggressive defense and some polished offensive players in Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov. There’s true potential for the Hurricanes, and fans are probably as excited as they’ve been since the team relocated.
The Detroit Red Wings won just 17 games last season and are searching for their first playoff trip since the 2015-16 season. The Red Wings aw a lot of players walk last season, including Jimmy Howard, Madison Bowey and Jonathan Ercisson. On the flip side, the Red Wings add a ton of players in Vladislav Namestnikov, Bobby Ryan, Thomas Greiss, Marc Staal, Christian Djoos, Troy Stecher and Jon Merril. The Red Wings likely aren’t going to end the playoff drought, but they have a lot of promising young players, including Filip Zadina, and they still have Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin leading the charge. The Red Wings are on the right track, but it’s going to require some patience.
The Hurricanes are 5-2 in their last 7 road games and 1-4 in their last 5 overall. The Red Wings are 4-10 in their last 14 home games and 10-41 in their last 51 overall. The under is 6-2 in Hurricanes last 8 overall. The over is 4-1 in Red Wings last 5 Thursday games. The Hurricanes are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Detroit.
The Detroit Red Wings should be better than they were a season ago, but that's not saying a whole lot in the short term. The Carolina Hurricanes are as good as they've been in years and there's real potential to surprise some folks who aren't paying attention. The Red Wings got slaughtered a lot last year and we could see similar results when playing above-average competition. I'll lay the PL here.
