The Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers meet in a Metropolitan division clash in NHL action from Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
The Washington Capitals will look to rebound after a 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers last time out. Lars Eller opened the scoring for the Caps with just under six minutes to go in the opening period but Philly would tie the game at one just over seven minutes into the 2nd. The flyers would surge ahead 3-1 with a pair of goals 2:17 apart late in the 2nd but Garnet Hathaway would cut the lead to 3-2 just 1:27 later. Philadelphia would restore the two-goal cushion early on in the 3rd and add a 5th goal for good measure to secure the win and send Washington back empty-handed. Braden Holtby took the loss, falling to 24-14-5 on the year after giving up all 5 goals on 29 shots faced in the losing effort.
The New York Rangers will be out to snap a three-game losing skid after a 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues last time out. Mika Zibanejad opened the scoring for New York with just under eight minutes to go in the 1st period, but St. Louis would tie the game at one with the lone goal of the 2nd period. The Blues would take the lead for good just before the midway point of the 3rd and would add an insurance goal with just :06 to go in the 3rd on an empty net. Alexandar Georgiev took the loss, falling to 16-14-1 on the year after giving up a pair of goals on 21 shots faced in the losing effort.
Head-to-head, Washington is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
Washington’s had the upper hand on New York in recent meetings, so getting the Capitals with a low line is tempting. However, while they’re not eliminated, the Rangers have encountered some turbulence on their playoff push, and this is the kind of game where we see if the Rangers are serious about trying to finish strong or not. This is the definition of a gut check game for New York, and I think catching the Capitals on a back to back may be enough of an edge for the Rangers here. I’ll take a shot with the Rangers and the slight plus money here.
