The Columbus Blue Jackets and the New Jersey Devils meet in NHL action from the Prudential Center on Sunday evening.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will be out to snap a four-game losing streak after a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers last time out. New York opened the scoring just :22 into the game before Oliver Bjorkstrand tied the game at one with just 1:08 to go in the 2nd period. The tie would hold through most of the 3rd before the Rangers tok the lead with just over three minutes to go and would add an insurance goal on an empty net two minutes after that to send Columbus spiralling to a 4th straight loss. Elvis Merzlikins took the loss, falling to 12-8-5 on the year after allowing two goals on 27 shots faced in the losing effort.
The New Jersey Devils will look to rebound from a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last time out. Carolina opened the scoring just under four minutes into the game before Mirco Mueller tied the game at one for the Devils. The Hurricanes restored their lead just 4:16 later, and added to the lead with the lone goal of the 2ndperiod. Carolina went up 4-1 just 1:44 into the 3rd and added a 5th with just over five minutes to play, but Joey Anderson would respond just :21 later for the Devils. All it turned out to be was a consolation goal though, as Carolina held on for the win. Louis Domingue took the loss, falling to 3-7-2 on the year after allowing all 5 goals on 30 shots faced in the losing effort.
Columbus is 0-4 in their last 4 games overall and 6-2 in their last 8 division games while the under is 37-18-1 in their last 56 games overall. New Jersey is 7-17 in their last 24 home games and 18-54 in their last 72 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 9-3 in their last 12 games as a home underdog. Columbus is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings between these two teams and 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in New Jersey.
I’m not usually the person to try to advocate for a team that’s lost 4 straight laying decent sized juice on the road, but the reality is that Columbus is the better team here and have had lights out goaltending that have just hit a rough patch lately and have taken a couple of bad bounces. The Blue Jackets have also owned New Jersey for some time now and I just don’t see how the Devils buck that trend here. I’ll lay the juice with the Devils in this spot.
