The New York Rangers and the Columbus Blue Jackets meet in NHL action from the Enterprise Center on Friday night.
The New York Rangers will look to add to their current htree-game winning streak after a 4-3 shootout win over Minnesota last time out. Minnesota took the lead just before the halfway point of the opening period before Artemi Panarin got the Rangers on the board with just over eight minutes to go in the 1st. The Wild re-took the lead later in the 1st and pushed the lead to 3-1 late in the 2nd period. Pavel Buchnevich pulled a goal back with just over eight minutes to go in the 3rd before Mika Zibanejad tied the game at three for the Rangers with just over a minute to play in regulation. The game needed extra time, and overtime solved nothing, so it was off to a shootout where the Rangers potted both of their chances while Minnesota missed both of theirs, giving the Rangers the win and the extra point to go along with it. Alexandar Georgiev got the win to improve to 13-11-1 on the year after stopping 23 of 26 shots faced in regulation and overtime as well as both shots faced in the shootout.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will look to snap a three-game losing streak after a 4-3 overtime loss to Buffalo last time out. Nathan Gerbe opened the scoring for Columbus late in the 1st before Boone Jenner doubled Columbus’ lead just 1:31 into the 2nd period. Buffalo finally got on the board with just over a minute to go in the 2nd and tied the game at two just over two minutes into the 3rd period. The Sabres took a 3-2 lead with just over four minutes to go and almost looked headed for the win before Markus Nutivaara tied the game at three with just over a minute to play. This game went to OT as well, and Buffalo didn’t need the shootout as the Sabres potted the game-winner with just over two minutes to go in the extra frame, sending Columbus back with just a point to show for their work. Matiss Kivlenieks took the OT loss, falling to 1-0-2 on the year after allowing all 4 goals on 27 shots faced in the losing effort.
Head-to-head, the road team is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and the Rangers are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings as well.
The plus money with the Rangers is definitely worth a look as they’re the team playing better hockey coming into this game, but I’m a bit weary of both teams being on a back-to-back and sometimes in that spot home ice can be the difference. With that said, I’m going to side with the under. I expect there to be tired legs, but I’m also expecting a battle, and both Shesterkin for the Rangers and Merzlikins for the Blue Jackets have been standing on their respective heads in goal for their respective teams, and I could easily see 3 goals or less being scored in this game so I’ll take the under in this spot.
