The Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers meet in game three of their qualifying round series from Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday night.
The Carolina Hurricanes will try to complete the sweep of the Rangers after taking a 2-0 series lead with a 4-1 win over New York in game two on Monday. Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring for the Hurricanes just 4:32 into the game but Artemi Panarin would even the game at one for the Rangers with just under eight minutes to go in the opening frame. Svechnikov would restore Carolina’s lead 1:11 into the second and Jordan Martinook would push the lead to 3-1 1:11 after that. The Rangers wold chase for a goal to get back into the game but Carolina would instead add an insurance goal to pad their lead as Svechnikov completed his hat trick with just under six minutes to go in the third and the ‘Canes would ride that lead to the finish line as they would take a 2-0 series lead at the final horn.
Petr Mrazek got the win after stopping 23 of 24 shots faced in the winning effort while Henrik Lundqvist took the loss after allowing four goals on 34 shots faced in defeat.
Carolina is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall and 6-2 in their last 8 games playing on no rest while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record. New York is 2-6 in their last 8 games overall and 2-6 in their last 8 playoff games as an underdog while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games playing on no rest. The underdog is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
I expect this one to be a battle of the backups on the back-to-back, but these are two teams that have two of the more capable backups in the NHL in James Reimer for Carolina and Alexandar Georgiev for the Rangers. I also expect a tight game once again between the two sides and like the first two games that saw five goals apiece, I think we see more of the same here so I’ll take the under as my pick for this game.
