The Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames meet in game two of their best-of-five qualifying round series in NHL action from Rogers Place on Monday night.
The Winnipeg Jets will try to rebound and even up the series after Calgary won the opening game of the series by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday. Andrew Copp actually gave Winnipeg the lead just under nine minutes into the game and the lead held until Johnny Gaudreau tied the game at one for the Flames just after the seven-minute mark of the second period. Tobias Rieder gave Calgary the lead short-handed with just over seven minutes to go in the middle frame and Mikael Backlund pushed the lead to 3-1 with less than two minutes to play in the second period. Winnipeg would chase the whole 3rd period for a goal to get back into the game but it wouldn’t come as Anthony Mangiapane scored on an empty net late in the 3rd period to give Calgary a 4-1 lead as the Flames put the game on ice.
Cam Talbot got the win in the opener in goal for Calgary, stopping 17 of 18 shots faced in the win while Connor Hellebuyck took the loss for the Jets, allowing three goals on 32 shots faced in the losing effort.
Winnipeg is 5-12 in their last 17 games as an underdog and 0-5 in their last 5 games following a loss of 3 or more goals while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Calgary is 1-4 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and 1-4 in their last 5 playoff games as a favorite while the over is 13-3 in their last 16 games against a team with a winning record. The under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams
Winnipeg's in tough as they have to play at least the next couple of games without Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine, with Scheifele being the victim of a questionable check by the Flames Matthew Tkachuk and Laine out with a hand injury after blocking a shot. The goaltending for the Jets is capable to steal a game or even a series if it stays hot enough, but Scheifele and Laine is just a lot of talent to replace on such a short turnaround with a shortened series to begin with. Give me Calgary to take a 2-0 lead on Winnipeg here.
