The 7 seed New York Islanders and the 10 seed Florida Panthers will meet in the Qualifying Round of the NHL Playoffs. This will be a Best-of-5 series between the two Eastern Conference teams. Bet This NHL Series Here
The New York Islanders finished the regular season with a record 35-23-10 record and a .588 point percentage. Of course, these numbers come from a shortened NHL regular season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Florida Panthers finished the regular season with a 35-26-8 record and a .565 point percentage respectively.
The New York Islanders, led by Stanely Cup Champion head coach Barry Trotz, are the ‘favorites’ in this series based on their seeding. The Isles were 9th in the NHL in Goals Against Per Game, allowing only 2.79 goals per game. The Islanders; however, were near the bottom of the league in terms of Goals For Per Game with 2.78. C Mat Barzal led the Islanders in scoring with 19 goals and 41 assists (60 points). G Semyon Varlamov was the team’s leading goaltender with 19 wins, a .914 Save Percentage, and a 2.62 Goals Against Average (GAA).
The Florida Panthers, who are also coached by a former-Stanley Cup Champion in Joel Quenneville, open as the underdogs in this series as the 10 seed. Florida was sixth in the league in goals scored per game with 3.30. The Panthers struggled on the defensive side of things by being tied for 28th in the league in Goals Against Per Game at 3.25. Florida’s leading scorer was C Jonathon Huberdeau, who scored 23 goals and 55 assists during the regular season (78 points). The Panthers starting goaltender is G Sergei Bobrovsky, who struggled in the regular season with 23 wins, a .900 Save Percentage, and a 3.23 Goals-Against Average.
The Islanders were 3-0-0 against the Panthers during the regular season, while the Cats went 0-2-1 against New York.
This series, like many others in the Qualifying Round, should be competitive and exciting to watch. Both teams have had their ups and downs throughout the regular season, and both teams could certainly scare and eventually defeat any of the top four seeds in the Eastern Conference. If Sergei Bobrovsky is on his top-game, he is extremely hard to beat, especially from an Islander team's standpoint, that struggled to score throughout the year.
If we have learned one thing about Islanders head coach Barry Trotz, its that you can never count him or his team out. The Islanders are tough on defense and their goaltending tandem can definitely give teams fits. I expect the Islanders to score enough early in games to be able to focus on defense and win this series in a hard-fought five games. Overall, this series should be one of the more entertaining for sure, as either team has a big Cinderella run in them. Bet This NHL Series Here
