The Los Angeles Kings and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet in NHL action from the PPG Paints Arena on Saturday night.
The Los Angeles Kings will look to build on a 2-1 win over Anaheim, snapping an 11-game losing streak on the road. Matt Luff opened the scoring for L.A. with the lone goal of the opening period before Jeff Carter doubled the lead early in the 2nd for the Kings. The Kings would ride that 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd where Anaheim pulled a goal back, but that’s as close as the Ducks would get as Los Angeles held on for the victory. Jonathan Quick got the win to improve to 9-12-1 on the year after stopping 36 of 37 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to build on a 1-0 overtime win over Columbus in their last outing. Pittsburgh doubled the Blue Jackets 12-6 in shots on goal in the 1st and 3rd periods, but despite the shots advantage, we couldn’t find a winner, or a goal for that matter, in 60 minutes of regulation time. Bryan Rust gave the Pens the lone goal of the game and thus, the game winner just over three minutes into the overtime period. Rust led the Pens with 6 shots on goal while Alex Galchenyuk had 4 shots on goal in the winning effort. Tristan Jarry got the win to improve to 8-5-0 on the year, stopping all 17 shots faced for his 3rd shutout of the season.
Los Angeles is 17-44 in their last 61 road games and 7-23 in their last 30 games against the Eastern Conference while the under is 6-0-1 in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 134-62 in their last 196 home games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against the Pacific division.
I considered L.A. with the heavy plus money after snapping that road losing streak, but a win over the Ducks, who are struggling in their own right, doesn’t really move the needle much and the Kings have still won just 3 of their 16 road games so far this season. Pittsburgh continues to play rock solid in spite of all their injuries, especially at home, and I think the Penguins do some damage on Saturday at the Kings’ expense. I’ll side with Pittsburgh on the puck line in this one.
