The New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens meet in NHL action from the Bell Centre on Saturday night.
The New York Rangers will look to rebound after a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators last time out. Ottawa opened the scoring just :57 into the game and doubled the lead less than six minutes later before Jacob Trouba got the Rangers on the board late in the 1st, cutting the deficit in half. That was as close as New York got though, as Ottawa restored the two-goal lead just 1:11 into the 2nd and added a 4th on the power play later in the 2nd. The Sens would ride that 4-1 lead to the finish line, sending the Rangers back empty-handed. Henrik Lundqvist got the loss, falling to 5-5-1 on the year after allowing 4 goals on 39 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Montreal Canadiens will look to rebound from back-to-back defeats after a 2-1 overtime loss to the same Ottawa Senators in their last outing. The game was scoreless through the opening 20 minutes of play before Nick Suzuki got the Canadiens on the board just :44 into the 2nd period. The Senators would tie the game at one just before the midway point of the 2nd, sending us to the 3rd tied at one and the final 20 minutes would fail to produce a winner as well. The overtime period was short-lived as Ottawa found a winner just :38 into the extra frame, sending Montreal back with just a single point to show for their efforts. Carey Price took the OT loss, falling to 10-5-3 after allowing both goals on 24 shots faced in the losing effort.
New York is 1-4 in their last 5 games against the Atlantic division and 23-50 in their last 73 road games while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games playing on no rest. Montreal is 11-5 in their last 16 home games and 2-7 in their last 9 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 Saturday games. New York is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 7-19 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams in Montreal.
The heavy plus money with the Rangers is tempting considering that the Habs just lost a pair of winnable games against Columbus and Ottawa, but the Rangers are on the 2nd half of a back-to-back after being shelled by Ottawa on Friday and I just think that Montreal was a victim of bad luck in both those games as you could make a serious case that Montreal played the better game in both circumstances. Add in New York’s lack of success in Montreal and I think you have to side with the Habs on the puck line to add to New York’s misery here.
