The Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders meet in NHL action from Barclays Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Florida Panthers will look to rebound after a 5-4 overtime losses to the Washington Capitals in their last outing. Washington opened the scoring just :25 into the game before Frank Vatrano got the Panthers on the board just 1:30 later. Brett Connolly gave Florida a 2-1 lead late in the 1st to take into the 2nd, where Aleksander Barkov gave Florida a 3-1 :27 into the middle frame. Washington tied the game at three with just under eight minutes to go in the 2nd before Evgenii Dadonov restored Florida’s lead. Washington tied the game at four :44 into the 3rd, and the rest of the final period wouldn’t produce a winner, so it was off to overtime where Washington found the winner just :17 into the extra period. Sergei Bobrovsky ended up with theOT loss to fall to 6-2-4 on the year after giving up all 5 goals on 31 shots faced in the losing effort.
The New York Islanders will look to bounce back after having their 10-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh in their last outing. Casey Cizikas opened the scoring for the Isles just :19 into the game and rode that 1-0 lead into the 2nd period where Cal Clutterbuck and Adam Pelech scored 2:58 apart to give New York a 3-0 lead with Clutterbuck’s marker coming short-handed. The Isles were up 3-0 in the 3rd, but Pittsburgh pulled one back just 1:38 into the 3rd and tied the game before the midway point of the final frame with a pair of goals 2:32 apart. The rest of the 3rd wouldn’t produce a winner, so it was off to overtime where Pittsburgh found a winner 3:25 into the extra frame. Semyon Varlamov ended up with the OT loss, falling to 5-2-1 on the year after allowing all 4 goals on 39 shots faced in the losing effort.
Florida is 7-16 in their last 23 games against a team with a winning record and 6-16 in their last 22 games against the Metropolitan division while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 Saturday games. New York is 6-0 in their last 6 games against the Atlantic division and 4-0 in their last 4 games as a home favorite while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. Florida is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in New York.
The plus money with the Panthers is tempting as Florida showed some grit against Washington, and the Panthers have won 4 of the last 5 meetings between the two in New York. However, New York has to be angry at themselves after having an 11th straight win in their sights but just losing focus against a veteran Penguins group. I think that the Islanders will want to get back to their winning ways and I think they take some frustration out on the Panthers, so I’ll lay the low line with New York in this spot.
