The Tampa Bay Lightning and the New Jersey Devils meet in NHL action from the Prudential Center on Wednesday night.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking to rebound from a 4-1 loss at the hands of the New York Rangers in their last outing. Nikita Kucherov gave Tampa Bay the lead with the lone goal of the opening period before New York tied the game at one with the lone goal of the 2nd period. The score would hold through the first half of the 3rd period before New York scored three goals in a span of 6:28, including two goals in 1:50 late in the 3rd to secure the win and send Tampa Bay home empty handed. Andrei Vasilevskiy ended up with the loss, falling to 5-3-0 after allowing 3 goals on 41 shots faced in the losing effort.
The New Jersey Devils will look to bounce back after a 5-3 loss to Arizona at home in their last outing. Sami Vatanen and Jack Hughes staked New Jersey an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals 1:57 apart in the first period. Arizona pulled one back late in the opening frame and would tie the game at two just after the two-minute mark of the 2nd period. Pavel Zacha restored the Devils lead before Arizona tied the game at three just :31 later. The Coyotes took the lead early in the 3rd and New Jersey would be unable to find a game-tying goal before the ‘Yotes added an empty net goal to seal the deal. MacKenzie Blackwood took the loss, falling to 2-2-2 on the year after allowing 4 goals on 16 shots faced in the losing effort.
Tampa Bay is 38-17 in their last 55 road games and 1-5 in their last 6 games as a road favorite while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. New Jersey is 8-20 in their last 28 games overall and 15-39 in their last 54 games as an underdog while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 road games. Tampa Bay is 7-17 in the last 24 meetings between these two teams in New Jersey.
Tampa Bay burned me against the Rangers on Tuesday, so I’m not overly quick to jump back on board with Tampa Bay as the Bolts just feel like something is different from last year’s team that won the Presidents’ Trophy. On the other hand, my dislike for the Devils and their goaltending is well-documented as I just don’t like what I’ve seen from New Jersey between the pipes. Curtis McElhinney is expected to start for Tampa Bay and he’s allowed 10 goals in three games for Tampa Bay this year while Cory Schneider has allowed 15 goals across his last 4 appearances. I’ll side with the over in this one.
