The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins meet in an Atlantic division battle from the TD Garden on Thursday night.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will look to build on a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens in their last outing to improve to 3-2-1 this season. Montreal opened the scoring in the 2nd half of the opening period before Braydon Coburn tied the game in the waning seconds of the 1st. Steven Stamkos pushed the Bolts ahead 2-1 just over a minute into the 2nd on the power play and Tyler Johnson followed just :57 later to give the Lightning a 3-1 lead that they’d hold on to until the final horn despite being outshot 25-15 in the final two periods. Andrei Vasilevskiy got the win to improve to 3-1-0 on the year after stopping 33 of 34 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Boston Bruins will look for another victory to build on their 5-1-0 start to the year after a 4-2 triumph over Anaheim last time out. David Pastrnak gave the Bruins the lead after the first 20 minutes with the lone goal of the opening frame before doubling the lead with his 2nd goal of the game just after the midway point of the middle frame. Anaheim tied the game late in the 2nd. Pastrnak added his 3rd and 4th goals of the game 2:14 apart to open up the 3rd. Anaheim pulled one back to make it 4-2, but that’s as close as the Ducks got as the B’s closed up shop in the final four minutes. Jaroslav Halak got the win to improve to 2-1-0 on the year after stopping 30 of 32 shots faced in the victory.
Tampa Bay is 44-10 in their last 54 division games and 37-17 in their last 54 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Boston is 8-0 in their last 8 games against the Eastern Conference and 60-26 in their last 86 home games while the under is 20-8-4 in their last 32 Thursday games. Tampa Bay is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams and 10-30-3 in the last 43 meetings between these two teams in Boston.
The Bolts have had a lot of recent success against Boston and the entire Atlantic division for that matter, but the TD Garden has been a house of horrors for the Lightning as well over the years. While the low line with Tampa Bay is tempting, Boston has been too good this season, especially at home, while something just seems a bit sluggish about this year’s Lightning team. Tampa Bay will probably make me eat my words in a few weeks when they rattle off a big winning stretch, but as far as this game goes, I think the Bruins are playing too well to pass on a low line so I’ll side with Boston at home here.
