The Los Angeles Kings and the Calgary Flames meet in NHL action from Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday night.
The Los Angeles Kings will look to bounce back after dropping their season opener on Saturday by a final score of 6-5 against Edmonton. Edmonton opened the scoring less than a minute in before Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis scored 4:52 apart to give the Kings a 2-1 lead. The Oilers would tie it up just 1:18 later but Anze Kopitar would restore the lead with just over five minutes to go in the opening period. Edmonton would tie the game in the second, sending us to the final frame deadlocked at three. Michael Amadio helped L.A. retake the lead but the Oilers tied it up before Drew Doughty helped L.A. push ahead again. Edmonton tied it up once more after the midway point or the period and took the lead just over three minutes later, holding on the send the Kings back empty handed. Jonathan Quick took the loss after allowing all 6 goals on 31 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Calgary Flames will look to build on their first win of the year coming in the form of a 3-0 win over Vancouver in their last outing. Elias Lindholm gave the Flames the lead by the end of the opening period before Sean Monahan doubled that advantage just 1:10 into the 2nd period. The score stayed that way until late in the 3rd when Johnny Gaudreau added an insurance marker to seal the deal for Calgary in the win. David Rittich got the win for the Flames after stopping all 34 shots he faced in the winning effort for his 1st shutout of the season.
Los Angeles is 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 16-42 in their last 58 games overall while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 games as an underdog. Calgary is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 44-18 in their last 62 games as a favorite of -201 or more while the under is 8-1-2 in their last 11 home games. The road team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
The road team has had a lot of success in this matchup, so the plus money could be worth a look and hold a bit more weight this early in the season. However, Los Angeles is looking like the same Kings team that struggled last season, the same team that can’t keep the puck out of the net and breaking news, you’re not going to win many games if you’re unable to keep the puck out of the goal. Calgary bounced back nicely against Vancouver and the Flames are a much better team at home than on the road, so I’ll side with Calgary for the win and to cut down some of the heavy juice, I’ll back the Flames on the puck line.
Chris’s Pick Calgary -1.5
