The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet in NHL action from PPG Paints Arena on Saturday night.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season coming in the form of a 4-1 loss to Toronto in their last outing. Toronto opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening frame and doubled their advantage just after the midway point of the 2nd period. Cam Atkinson benefitted from a favorable bounce to cut the deficit back to 2-1, but that’s as close as Columbus got as the Blue Jackets were held to just the one goal while Toronto added a pair of 3rd period markers for insurance. Joonas Korpisalo took the loss after allowing 4 goals on 29 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will also look to rebound after a disappointing start to their season, falling to Buffalo at home by a final score of 3-1. Buffalo opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period before Evgeni Malkin would tie the game at one early in the 2nd. That’s as close as the Pens got though, as Buffalo retook the lead and added an insurance marker by the end of the second. The Pens would be unable to find the back of the net in the 3rd, leading to the defeat when all was said and done. Matt Murray took the loss after allowing 3 goals on 41 shots faced in the losing effort.
Columbus is 8-2 in their last 10 road games and 26-10 in their last 36 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record. Pittsburgh is 0-5 in their last 5 division games and 121-57 in their last 178 home games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the Eastern Conference. Columbus is 3-13 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams and 4-19 in the last 23 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
Both of these teams got off to disappointing starts to the year, and you could probably make a case for Columbus as there’s not much shame in losing to the Leafs while Pittsburgh lost to a Sabres team at home that’s been pretty bad away from home for quite some time now. However, the Penguins are the more talented team from top to bottom and are catching the Blue Jackets on the end of a back-to-back after having to spend a lot of energy against Toronto on Friday. I won’t be betting this, but if forced to pick, I’d side with Pittsburgh. If the Penguins don’t win this one, there will be some serious questions early on.
