Philly opened their 2025 season with a matchup versus their division mate Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles managed a 3-0 advantage in the second half, which helped the team eke out a 24-20 win. Philadelphia committed nine penalties along the way however, and threw for just 144 passing yards in the victory. Game two was another win for the Eagles, this time against the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch. Philly scored in every quarter in another close finish, eking one out 20-17 in the end.
In Week 3 versus the Los Angeles Rams, Philly played another tight one. The Eagles went into the second half trailing 19-7, then hit a 26-7 run from there in a comeback victory 33-26. QB Jalen Hurts was 21-of-32 for 226 yards and three touchdowns, and also posted a rush score. Saquon Barkley carried 18 times for 46 yards and AJ Brown led the receivers with six catches for 109 yards and a TD.
Over on the Tampa Bay side, they started out the year in a matchup versus the Atlanta Falcons. The Bucs gave up points in every quarter but still held on for the road win 23-20. Tampa Bay was pretty good on third downs (7-of-14) in that one but threw for only 159 yards passing. Game two featured another close escape for the Buccaneers as they powered out a 20-19 road win over the Houston Texans. Tampa Bay was 6-of-14 on third downs this time and had a tepid 191 passing yards in the win, but the defense was pretty great.
Matched up against the lowly New York Jets last weekend, Tampa Bay was looking good heading into the fourth quarter sporting a 23-6 lead. The Bucs had to hold off a flurry from new York in a 21-6 frame however, but still held on to win 29-27. QB Baker Mayfield was 19-of-29 for 233 yards and a score. Bucky Irving led the rush with 25 totes for 66 yards and Emeka Egbuka had six catches for 85 yards. Sterling Shepard added four catches for 80 yards as well.
I’ll stay with Tampa Bay, but you could make a good case either way here. The Bucs have quite a bit to clean up after their tight escape over the Jets last weekend. Tampa posted a whopping 14 penalties for 124 yards and went just 4-of-13 on third-down conversions alongside 347 offensive yards (225 passing) and 19 first downs. The defense held New York in check pretty well, posting 267 yards, 3-of-11 on third downs and a couple of takeaways. The Bucs have scored at least 20 points in all three games so far, but they’ve given up at least 19 in all three games as well.
As for the Eagles, they didn’t start very well in their win over the Rams but the strong finish carried the team in the second half. Philadelphia has 20 points or more in all three games so far as well, with 17 or more given up in each. This one could go a lot of different ways, but I think Tampa Bay can get in for a cover if all goes well.
