The New Orleans Saints will host the Tennessee Titans for their season opener this Sunday from the Caesars Superdome on FOX.

Tennessee Titans Preview

Tennessee went 7-10 last season, and finished second in the AFC South. The Titans took a step back last season, as they regressed by five wins after winning the division in 2020 and 2021. Tennessee scored 17.5 points per game last season, while allowing 21.1 ppg.

Titans Player Notes

Ryan Tannehill will open the season as the starter, with quarterbacks Malik Willis and Will Levis waiting in the wings. The former Texas A&M quarterback struggled to move the needle last season, and he’ll need to bring his A-game and remain healthy with the two young arms breathing down his neck. Tannehill passed for 2,536 yards with thirteen touchdowns to six interceptions thru twelve starts in 2022.

Derrick Henry will lead the backfield for an eighth season, and he returned in strong form after tearing his ACL in 2022, posting splits of 349/1538/13. Henry’s carry total looks overwhelming when you take into account just how many carries he’d had with Mike Vrabel at the helm, and the addition of former Tulane running back TyJae Spears should help ease the load.

• The wideout room is headlined by DeAndre Hopkins, who will be looking to revitalize his career after two down seasons in the desert. Nuk had been one of the best receivers in the league during his decade-long career, and it will be interesting to see how he fares with his third team, after posting 100-catch seasons with Houston and Arizona.

Treylon Burks is also set to take a bigger step here in year two, after totaling 33 receptions for 444 yards during his rookie season.

New Orleans Saints Preview

New Orleans also posted a 7-10 record last season, and finished third in the NFC South. The Saints naturally regressed after the departure of longtime coach Sean Payton, and they’ll look to avoid missing the playoffs for a third straight season. New Orleans scored 19.4 points per game last season, while allowing 20.3 ppg.

Saints Player Notes

Derek Carr will begin a new chapter here with New Orleans. The former Fresno quarterback was forced out of the door improperly by the Raiders organization after coming in and being the starter since his rookie season, and missing just two games over a nine-year stretch. Carr passed for 3,522 yards, with 24 touchdowns to four interceptions thru fifteen starts last season.

Alvin Kamara is set to miss the first three contests, meaning Jamaal Williams will be for a big workload after coming over from Detroit. The former BYU back broke through in a big way in 2022, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career, while leading the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns.

The Saints are led by the Ohio State tandem of Chris Olave and Michael Thomas. Olave enjoyed a strong rookie season that saw him lead the Saints in receptions (72), while surpassing the 1,000-yard mark. Thomas will be looking to put three injury-filled seasons behind him, and recover his league-leading 2019 form.

Corey’s Free Pick

New Orleans comes into this game with advantages of home field, the quarterback position, and defensively, and I believe they’ll come thru here in Week 1. Tennessee’s approaching a transition period, and this may serve as one of the contests that send them into that phase. Derrick Henry may have a productive outing, but I like the Saints pulling this one out at home.

The pick in this article is the opinion of the writer, not a PickDawgz site consensus.
